7 Jan. 2023, Saturday, Ahmedabad, India

Mahant Swami Maharaj and dignitaries from around the world pay tribute to Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s work of fostering Hindu spirituality and culture in North America

Over 500 children and youth from more than 75 centres across North America performed a touching cultural programme titled ‘Beyond Boundaries: North America Day’ paying tribute to Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s tireless spiritual travels around North America that led to unimaginable transformations in hundreds of thousands who were inspired to preserve their timeless cultural and spiritual heritage. Following the programme, His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj and dignitaries from around the world paid tribute to Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s inspiration of personal spirituality, Hindu mandirs, humanitarian service and interfaith harmony in North America.

Pramukh Swami Maharaj consecrated the first BAPS Swaminarayan mandir in North America in New York City in 1974. Since then, Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s inspiration and tireless efforts have led to the creation of 6 traditional stone Hindu mandirs and 108 hari mandirs in the United States and Canada. With the inspiration of Pramukh Swami Maharaj and the guidance of Mahant Swami Maharaj, the grand Swaminarayan Akshardham Mahamandir is taking shape in Robbinsville, New Jersey.

Evening Assembly

Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s tireless spiritual travels resulted in the spread of faith and goodwill across North America. Today’s evening assembly, dedicated as ‘Beyond Boundaries: BAPS North America Day’, began at 4.30 pm.

The programme started with video messages from many American dignitaries who expressed how Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s life and works had touched them over the years. Among the dignitaries were US Congressman Marc Veasey of Texas, who said, “Pramukh Swami Maharaj has brought joy to so many people in India and around the world, and he has inspired so many to do great things within our community.” US Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania said, “With a spirit of total selfless service, Pramukh Swami Maharaj has devoted his life to educational, health care, humanitarian, and environmental services while spearheading BAPS’s growth by creating 1,100 temples worldwide. I have visited many of these temples and seen with absolute joy how Indian culture has been so integrally interwoven with American culture such that these temples serve as beacons of friendship between India and America.”

This was followed by a unique presentation of videos from Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s 14 visits to North America from 1974 to 2014 accompanied by devotional hymns sung by over 100 children and youth from North America.

Then a drama interspersed with videos, dances, and testimonials of North American devotees highlighted Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s impact on North America’s Hindu community. The presentation first described how the wave of Indians migrating to North America in the 1970s faced immense social and financial struggles but were particularly concerned with upholding their children’s cultural and spiritual values in a land devoid of Hindu mandirs. Then, through videos and testimonials, they recounted Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s tireless travels and personal outreach throughout North America at the expense of his health to nurture their cultural and spiritual values over the generations. Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s visionary leadership in inspiring the month-long Cultural Festival of India in 1991 as well as the creation of 114 BAPS Swaminarayan mandirs around North America were highlighted as his timeless contribution to North America’s Hindu community. Then, various devotees recalled Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s constant efforts and care for the holistic development of children and youth through his decades of guidance and inspiration for weekly children and youth sabhas, Indian language classes, campus sabhas, and national conventions. The drama concluded with a video presentation of Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s inspiration for the creation of Swaminarayan Akshardham North America in Robbinsville, New Jersey which is being constructed through the voluntary efforts of thousands.

Then, Mahant Swami Maharaj addressed the assembly, “Today the swamis and devotees from America and Canada have come together and shared a beautiful presentation. Pramukh Swami Maharaj has gone to every corner of America and Canada and pleased everyone. His efforts have led to more than 100 mandirs and thousands of devotees in North America. We will see the culmination of his inspiration with the inauguration of Swaminarayan Akshardham in Robbinsville, New Jersey. Swaminarayan Akshardham will draw people from everywhere and inspire them with the universal values of Hinduism. Pramukh Swami Maharaj has said that we are not creating this Akshardham for public acclaim, but our sole purpose is that God may be pleased and we may attain liberation. The immense efforts of all the male and female volunteers, young and old, who have contributed to Akshardham are commendable. Due to their unity and enthusiasm, the work will soon be completed. All those who have volunteered in this effort will receive Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s whole-hearted grace, and everyone’s hearts will become golden.”

Several esteemed dignitaries were also present to pay tribute to Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s life of selfless service.

Prahlad Singh Patel, Minister of State for Food Processing Industries and Jal Shakti, Government of India, said, “Today, we face a challenge to instill moral and spiritual values in our future generations. I bow to Pramukh Swami Maharaj who spread the message of Indian cultural heritage across the world. I bow to the feet of all the swamis who are instilling moral and spiritual values among the young generation. Just like we receive light from the Sun, we receive good values by associating ourselves with God-realized Saints.”

BAPS is not just a community committed to Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s values, but a living, breathing symbol of volunteerism at its best. I have been given the responsibility of developing the skills and innovation of our nation’s young generation, but this event reminds us that culture, heritage, values and ideals are just as important a part becoming a young, productive, contributing Indian and world citizen. These messages, ideals and values ring true as India assumes the presidency of the G-20 and works with other countries in shaping a better future for all of us and our families. May we live in a world where peace and prosperity are the directive principles of our life and future rather than conflict or discord.”

Harsh Vardhan Shringla, G-20 Chief Coordinator said, “We have come together to celebrate Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the unique spiritual individual who guided millions across the world who derive comfort and benefit from his teachings. Everyone has gone to the Akshardham mandirs in New Delhi and Gandhinagar, but the Akshardham mandir being built in New Jersey will be a major spiritual and cultural landmark for the whole world. Just at countless people today go to the Eiffel Tower, the Tower of London, or the Taj Mahal, soon they will go to Swaminarayan Akshardham in New Jersey. I commend the volunteers who are contributing to this exceptional cultural representation of India abroad, which is a matter of pride and joy to all of us.”

Mr. Cameron Mackay, The High Commissioner of Canada in India said, “Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s message ‘In the joy of others lies our own,’ is widely respected in Canada and around the world. His humanitarian services express important Canadian values. The 1,100 temples that he established around the world act as refuges in difficult times and provide a space to mediate and experience peace. Steadfast in his work for the community in times of natural disaster and crises, he has led devotees to provide relief for the well-being of everyone. His tireless work reached more than 50 countries including Canada. Pramukh Swami Maharaj made his first trip to Canada in 1974 and subsequently visited 13 times over 35 years. The BAPS Swaminarayan temple in Toronto is well-respected and appreciated by many Canadians and it symbolizes the rich heritage and cultural diversity of India and Canada. Hinduism is the third-largest religion in Canada followed by more than 800,000 Canadians. This is reflective of the strong cultural, spiritual and people-to-people ties between our two countries.”

The Prime Minister of Canada, the Honourable Justin Trudeau said in a video message to the assembly, “Today we are celebrating the rich life of His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj and everything he did to build and grow BAPS. Throughout his life, Pramukh Swami Maharaj left a mark on Canada. Around the world, he spread his lifelong message, ‘In the joy of others lies our own.’ Many of you have given life to the values he promoted, whether it is participating in BAPS Charities, volunteering in your mandir, or strengthening the communities you live in, Canadians have appreciated the ways that you are stepping up. Our country is stronger because of it, and I am inspired by everything you have built. Thank you.”

Honourable Michael D. Ford, Minister of Citizenship and Multiculturalism for the Province of Ontario in Canada said, “Ontario and India have a strong and vibrant relationship built on a shared tradition of democracy, commitment to pluralism, expanding trade, cultural exchanges and most importantly our people-to-people ties. As the Minister of Citizenship and Multiculturalism, I’m proud that Ontario is home to over 900,000 people from India. They help enrich our culture and contribute to our province’s economic growth and diversity.

Pramukh Swami Maharaj was a rare soul who was completely devoted to God. He also had a selfless desire to help others and promote peace and harmony across the globe. His words were thoughtful, meaningful and consoling, coming from a depth of profound experience and deep compassion. He gave enlightenment, guidance, and wisdom to the many entrusted to his care. He also went out of his way to care for the spiritual and physical needs of all who sought it. I thank the volunteers and leaders of BAPS for sharing your dedication, talent and light with the world. As a good friend of the BAPS mandir in Toronto, I have seen first-hand how his teachings and his legacy continue to live on through the spirit and work of his followers and in the impact of the work that you all do to help all people come closer to God, help them grow in all aspects of life and provide support to your communities in India, in Ontario, Canada and around the world.”

As part of the Pramukh Swami Maharaj Centenary Celebrations, Mahant Swami Maharaj inaugurated a new Cardiac Cath Lab for angiographies, angioplasties and pacemaker implantation in the Pramukh Swami Maharaj Hospital in Surat, which over the last 18 years has treated over 3 million patients.

Mr. Kenny Desai, President of the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA), said, “Pramukh Swami Maharaj led many to path of spirituality and motivation through temples. His simplicity and magnificence has inspired many and his work helped preserve our culture. He was forever the driving force for BAPS who spread the message of Vasudhaiv Kutambakam.”

I will also take back Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s message of de-addiction. The children’s show taught me to conquer fear and that each of us should become karmayogis and overcome challenges.”

One’s True Identity

6 Jan. 2023, Friday, Ahmedabad, India

On 6 January 2023, a special program was organized by the BAPS Women’s Wing of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) at the Women’s Empowerment Hall in Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar, where they highlighted the journey of Satsang in the Gulf countries.

Ms. Shwetaben Bhatt, BAPS women’s wing volunteer, Gulf Countries Cooperation Council.

“India and the UAE have shared good cultural and trade relations for decades. The Hindu community in the UAE has been praying for the UAE’s progress, peace and goodwill. These prayers were heard and hence, His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj arrived to sanctify this land. Middle Eastern countries were blessed time and again when Pramukh Swami Maharaj visited them in 1982, 1985 and 1997. History was created on 5 April 1997 when Pramukh Swami Maharaj prayed for the construction of a Hindu temple here. It was a dream that seemed impossible to fulfill at that time, however, devotees had unwavering faith in Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s prayers.”

Ms. Heenaben Gajjar, BAPS women’s wing volunteer, Gulf Countries Cooperation Council.

“In 2019, finally the wishes of devotees in the UAE were fulfilled. They got to experience the eagerly awaited moment of the arrival of His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj and the stone laying ceremony. On 20 April 2019 Mahant Swami Maharaj, in the presence of government officials, renowned dignitaries and 5,000 devotees, performed the puja of the first stone of this official place of worship, the BAPS Hindu Temple and invoked the presence of Bhagawan Swaminarayan on this land. This temple will be the symbol of a pious wish made by Pramukh Swami Maharaj almost 20 years ago of establishing mutual love and harmony.

Ms. Vaishaliben Mehta, BAPS women wing volunteer, Gulf Countries Cooperation Council.

“It is the first temple symbolizing Hinduism in Abu Dhabi. The temple highlights the concept of equal respect to all the religions as well as the Vedic idea of the world being one united family. In the foundation of this temple lies love, harmony and respect. Along with the construction, various social, cultural as well as spiritual activities are currently taking place on the site.”

Dr Saroj Vaidya, BAPS women wing volunteer, Gulf Countries Cooperation Council.

“During Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s visit to Bahrain in 1997, then King of Bahrain, His Royal Highness Sheikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa requested Pramukh Swami Maharaj to make Bahrain his home. 1 February 2022 became a historic day for Indians residing in UAE as well as all around the world when Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi informed the world about the building of BAPS Swaminarayan Hindu temple in Bahrain through his tweet.”

Vijayshree Guha, BAPS women wing volunteer, Gulf Countries Cooperation Council.

“Pramukh Swami Maharaj has left no stone unturned when it came to uplifting people’s lives. He has even reached the people of the UAE and as a result, Bahrain is blessed with a beautiful satsang community. With the divine inspiration of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the women of the Gulf Cooperation Council are progressing socially as well as spiritually. These women feel bliss and peace as they have the guidance of their guru Pramukh Swami Maharaj and Mahant Swami Maharaj.

“‘Religion is what spreads mutual love for all’ – this is how Pramukh Swami Maharaj defines religion. This is reflected in the creation of the BAPS Hindu Temple in Abu Dhabi which Mahant Swami Maharaj will be inaugurating on 14 February 2024, the auspicious occasion of Vasant Panchami.”

Tourism Conclave 2023

7 Jan. 2023, Saturday, Ahmedabad, India

India’s first tourism conclave was organized as a part of the centenary birth celebrations of His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj in Ahmedabad, in partnership with Gujarat Tourism and the Tourism Development Society.

More than 400 tour operators, event managers and hoteliers gathered on 7 January 2023 for the special one-day professional conference titled “Tourism Conclave 2023.”

The conference was led by a panel of prominent speakers, namely Manish Sharma (Founding Chairman and Managing Director, Akshar Travels), Mulu Bera ( Honourable Tourism Minister, Govt. of Gujarat), Hareet Shukla (IAS) (Secretary, Tourism and Aviation, Govt. of Gujarat), Alok Kumar Pandey (IAS) (Managing Director, Tourism Corporation of Gujarat), Manoj Joshi (Leading Bollywood Actor), Captain Ashwin Solanki (Chief Nautical Officer, Gujarat Maritime Board), Atul Bhalla (General Manager, West & East  India, ITC Hotels), and Ajay Prakash (Chairman, Travel Agents Federation of India).

In his enriching inaugural address on ‘Values on Spiritual Tourism’, Brahmaviharidas Swami said, “Tourism plays an important role in giving people a change of place and environment. But while places change, people don’t change. We should ask ourselves whether we can create joy even after removing all the instruments of entertainment.”

“People generally do not work without an incentive, yet Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar has turned around the conventions of existing industrial practices. More than 80,000 volunteers from different professions have selflessly created this gigantic complex of 600 acres. In Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar, we have erased the border between temporary and permanent, because while the Nagar is temporary, its positive impact on people’s lives is permanent. Even if someone met Pramukh Swami Maharaj briefly, he was left with a permanent imprint in his mind. In a world where there is a human impulse to change and move on, we should ponder how the tourism industry can create a permanent experience for people. We should strive to add quality to people’s lives.

“People’s lives are transformed when you serve people beyond their expectations. The shift in mindset starts in the initial minutes of interacting with your client. Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar is a clean, green and serene place, where people’s lives are transformed beyond imagination. There are more than 10 million paver blocks and 1 million flowering plants installed here. The visitors are self-disciplined. In all the 1,200 temples built by Pramukh Swami Maharaj worldwide, the annual footfall amounts to half a billion. You need to love your work and make people happy, as the first ‘wow!’ you create will be the last ‘how?!’.”

In the welcome address, Manish Sharma, Founding Chairman and Managing Director of Akshar Travels, said, “Since the inception of Gujarat Tourism in 2003, tourism in Gujarat has increased from 1% to 16%. This Tourism Conclave is the first of its kind to be held on this spiritual venue of Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar. When I was conducting a group tour of Europe, I sought my Guru Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s blessings. He told me, ‘Ensure that the spiritual principles of the passengers are not compromised, that they are served with good quality vegetarian food and the tour is carried out with discipline.’”

Thereafter, Honourable Hareet Shukla (IAS), Secretary of Tourism and Aviation for the Government of Gujarat, delivered a talk on ‘Investment Opportunities of Tourism in Gujarat.’ He began by saying, “Pramukh Swami Maharaj has been an inspiration for all of us.” He then spoke about the diverse tourist places available in Gujarat and the different policies of the Gujarat Government in helping to increase tourism in the state. He said, “According to the States Survey conducted by India Today, Gujarat consistently ranks in the top 3 states for tourism.” During his address, he also showed a short video on the UNESCO World Heritage sites in Gujarat.

Subsequently, Alok Kumar Pandey (IAS), Commissioner of Tourism and Managing Director of Tourism Corporation of Gujarat, spoke on ‘Tourism Growth & Key Opportunities in Gujarat.’ He said, “It makes me proud to know that Bhagwan Swaminarayan hailed from Ayodhya, which is near my native place.” He further spoke about the different facets of Gujarat Tourism, such as diverse tourism, culture, heritage, state of the art infrastructure, connectivity, sustainability, and world-class tourism capabilities. He further elaborated upon the history of important spiritual heritage places in Gujarat, such as Girnar, Dwarka, Bet-Dwarka, etc.

Manoj Joshi, a leading actor in Hindi and Gujarati cinema, shared, “The land of Gujarat is spiritually blessed as notable spiritual, corporate and political luminaries, including Bhagwan Krishna, Dhirubhai Ambani and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, belong to Gujarat. Gujaratis are immensely industrious and polite, and hence, are successful in different walks of life.” He elaborated on how cinema has developed from theatre to OTT Platforms, and how policies by the Government have made Gujarat a cinema-friendly state. He added, “Gujarat is a haven of diverse tourist locations. Due to its proximity to Mumbai, Gujarat serves as a viable destination for cinema shooting, providing employment to locals.”

In his keynote address, Mulu Bera, Honourable Tourism Minister of Gujarat, said, “I am proud to witness that the State of Gujarat is a pioneer of tourism. My belief is reaffirmed in the largest spiritual festival of the world ‘Pramukh Swami Maharaj Shatabdi Mahotsav.’ In the leadership and guidance of the Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Honourable Chief Minister of Gujarat Bhupendra Patel, new tourist attractions are being added making Gujarat a tourist-friendly state. Many tourists are flocking to Gujarat from around the world to witness different festivals and engage in wildlife, natural, historical and spiritual tourism.”

Captain Ashwin Solanki, Chief Nautical Officer of the Gujarat Maritime Board, spoke on ‘Marine Tourism of Gujarat’, highlighting the development of policies through which the State of Gujarat has become a haven for water sports, cruises, Ro-Pax Ferry services and the National Maritime Heritage Complex.

Ajay Prakash, Chairman of the Travel Agents Federation of India, spoke on ‘Tourism and Global Peace.’ He said, “Tourism by creating jobs offers great opportunities for emerging economies and reduces inequality and poverty. It should strive to conserve the natural environment and cultural heritage and traditions. Travel and tourism are about engaging with humankind and nature. It is about making connections beyond boundaries. In today’s times, travellers are more aware and discerning. The younger generation is much more conscious of the ecological footprint of any activity. So, all businesses need to take heed of this new paradigm.”

In his insightful talk, Gnanvatsaldas Swami, a leading spiritual motivational speaker of BAPS, said, “There are around 3.5 million temples in India. These temples are a source of direct employment to more than 35 million people and a source of indirect employment to many more, such as flower sellers and local market vendors. Promoting religious tourism will not only create a positive impact on the economy, but will also foster spiritual values and diminish social pollution.”

“In the 45 years of his spiritual leadership, Pramukh Swami Maharaj travelled to more than 50 countries, sanctified 250,000 homes, replied to 750,000 letters, created 1300 societal institutions (temples, hospitals, schools, hostels, etc.), initiated 1,000 sadhus and created a permanent volunteer force of 50,000 volunteers. Upon witnessing a glimpse of Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s life in this Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar, we can learn that faith coupled with hard work and ethics is the key to success. In Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar, one can experience enlightenment, excitement, elegance and entertainment.”

In his concluding remarks, Yogi Trivedi of Columbia University, New York, provided an overview of his new book In Love, At Ease: Daily Spirituality with Pramukh Swami, and shared some of his personal experiences with Pramukh Swami Maharaj.

All the delegates were then given a guided tour of ‘Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar’ where they learned about Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s inspiring life and worldwide contributions for humanity through the various attractions and exhibitions.

Today’s event is the twelfth in a series of 14 such conferences for professionals of various fields, including accountants, lawyers, industrialists, technocrats and entrepreneurs. It is a testament to the progressive mindset of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, whose work and teachings touched people from all walks of life, to ensure the holistic success and happiness of everyone in society.

Pramukh Swami Maharaj Shatabdi Mahotsav: Parshadi Diksha Samaroh

6 Jan. 2023, Friday, Ahmedabad, India

Mahant Swami Maharaj gave 46 BAPS Youths Parshadi Diksha in Pramukh Swami Maharaj Centenary Celebration

Mahant Swami Maharaj initiated 46 BAPS youths into the monastic order in a grand initiation ceremony at Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar in Ahmedabad before an audience of tens of thousands from around the world on the morning of 6 January 2023. The 46 highly educated and devoted youths received parshadi dikshaa and embarked on their lifelong path of worldly renunciation, self-realization and service to God and society.

Of the 46 youths taking initiation, there are 4 postgraduates, 22 graduates, 18 engineers, a teacher, a pharmacist, an MBA and an MPH. Having graduated from prestigious Indian and foreign universities like IIM, Rutgers University (USA) and Melbourne University (Australia), these youths left the comforts of home and promising careers to eagerly walk on the path of renunciation. The youths have come from around India and the world, including nine from America, one from Africa, and others from Rajasthan, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Gujarat.

The newly initiated parshads will continue their rigorous training at the BAPS seminary in Sarangpur, Gujarat, where they will lead a life of simplicity and austerity steeped in devotion, service and learning. The seven-year training course helps them become proficient in their personal spiritual endeavours related to worship, service, austerities and learning. The educational curriculum includes a deep study of Swaminarayan Hindu theology, history and literature as well as of the Ramayana, Mahabharat, Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads and other Hindu scriptures. It also includes a study of languages such as Sanskrit, Hindi, Gujarati and English, and world religions.

The diksha ceremony started at 9 AM with the preliminary initiation rituals performed by Sadguru swamis. Following the rituals, senior BAPS swamis addressed the assembly. Then Mahant Swami Maharaj completed the initiation rituals and blessed each new parshad with a new name.

One of the heads of the BAPS Seminary in Sarangpur, Gnaneshwardas Swami, said, “Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s goal was to redeem countless souls by removing the primordial ignorance of ego, ‘I’ness and My-ness.’ Knowledge and understanding are key to solving problems—personal, social and global. To uplift society, Bhagwan Swaminarayan created a cadre of swamis who did not just preach but connected with each individual to inspire social, moral and spiritual upliftment.

“As the swamis visited thousands of homes in hundreds of villages, society improved and grew prosperous as people were freed from the shackles of addictions and superstitions. Bhagwan Swaminarayan believed in spiritual progress through social progress. The swamis were renunciates who worked for society but remained detached from it, with no selfish motives, striving only to put humanity onto a better path. Their contribution to society was and is immense, as even today they continue to walk this path of improving society.

“Four decades ago, Pramukh Swami Maharaj established a seminary for swamis in Sarangpur. The seminary provides knowledge across a vast range of subjects from religious and cultural studies to music, art and creative studies. This holistic education develops swamis who, while spiritual, remain in touch with contemporary society, enabling the new generation to connect with our timeless principles to guide them onto the right path.”

Then, Swayamprakashdas Swami (Doctor Swami) said, “On the occasion of Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s Centenary Celebrations, 46 youths are being initiated into the monastic order. The Indian spiritual tradition puts a special emphasis on sacrifice. In the Shrimad Bhagwat, we find the story of Dhruv, who renounced home at the age of 5 and performed austerities to please Vishnu Bhagwan. Even Prince Siddharth, upon seeing sorrow in society decided to leave his palatial home. He performed immense spiritual endeavours, became enlightened, and was renowned as Gautam Buddha. This tradition of sacrifice has continued up to the modern era. In his lifetime, Bhagwan Swaminarayan initiated over 3,000 swamis who possessed the virtues of morality, spiritual wisdom, worldly detachment and devotion. All the youths being initiated into the monastic order today are contributing to the betterment of society.  I express my gratitude towards them and their family members.”

Finally, Mahant Swami Maharaj said, “It is only due to the wish of Yogiji Maharaj and the grace of Pramukh Swami Maharaj that these youths took initiation into the monastic order today. In this materialistic world when people are chasing luxuries, these youths are forsaking them to contribute to a larger spiritual cause. Through these youths, the universal message of spirituality espoused by Bhagwan Swaminarayan will spread everywhere. These youths will serve society by inspiring many people to follow the path of morality and spirituality. I pray that all the new initiates inculcate the values of saintliness, achieve a God-realized state and attain ekantik dharma. Upon taking initiation, you are very close to God who is the emperor of countless universes. Therefore, your parents don’t have to worry. I express my immense thanks to the parents of the new initiates. It is easy to surrender money and luxuries but not easy to lovingly offer one’s child. As these parents have done this great service for God and society, I will pray for their peace and happiness.”

BAPS Gulf Countries Day

6 Jan. 2023, Friday, Ahmedabad, India

Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and dignitaries from around the world pay tribute to
Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s work of harmony and selfless service in the Middle East

Pramukh Swami Maharaj championed amity and harmony between countries and religions. Through his vision and inspiration, Abu Dhabi is witnessing the rise of a spiritual oasis in the form of a temple. The upcoming BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi is the first of its kind in the Arab World and serves as a symbol of inspiration for the 3.3 million Indians living in the UAE, as well as those of other cultures and communities.

Today’s evening assembly, dedicated as ‘BAPS Gulf Countries Day’, began at 5pm. It centred on four stories of prayer, friendship, harmony, and transformation that encapsulated Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s travels and interactions with devotees in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and the region. Each theme was introduced by a short video and followed by an exposition on the theme.

The first video introduced the centrality of prayer in Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s life. Ashok Kotecha, a BAPS volunteer from the UAE, narrated his personal experience from 1997 when Pramukh Swami Maharaj visited the desert and prayed, “May peace prevail here and everywhere. May all countries be free of internal enmity and progress in their unique way. May there be a temple in Abu Dhabi.’  The temple being built today is the result of that prayer.” Ashok Kotecha expanded on the on-going construction of the BAPS Abu Dhabi temple before Paramvandan Swami, a BAPS swami serving in the UAE, emphasised the power of prayer.

The assembly continued with a special video presentation introducing the theme of ‘Friendship’, after which Viveksagardas Swami elaborated on the friendship of Pramukh Swami Maharaj with the King of Bahrain.

The third theme was ‘Harmony’, which was introduced by a short video, after which Atmaswarupdas Swami narrated the visit of Pramukh Swami Maharaj to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem in 1999 and his prayer for global interfaith harmony.

The final video was on the theme of ‘Transformation’, followed by an inspiring talk by Brahmaviharidas Swami, the project lead for the BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi. He said, “The four stories of prayer, friendship, harmony and transformation reflected the love, harmony and peace of Pramukh Swami Maharaj. The temple rising in Abu Dhabi is a miracle taking shape due to the prayers of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the integrity and will of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the generosity of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. With this confluence of spirituality, integrity and generosity, the impossible became possible.

“The will to spread love, harmony and tolerance is the basic foundation of the temple known as a spiritual oasis for global harmony. President APJ Abdul Kalam said to Pramukh Swami Maharaj, ‘The way you are, the way you love, the way you include everybody – one day there will be a temple in Dubai.’ He called Pramukh Swami Maharaj his ultimate guru and often said, ‘All religions are unique and beautiful, but they are like a disconnected archipelago of islands. Pramukh Swami Maharaj is the bridge that connects every religion, culture and country.’”

Several esteemed dignitaries were also present to pay tribute to Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s life of selfless service.

Former CEO of the Abu Dhabi Investment Council Mr. Nazem Al-Kudsi, said, “As an Arabic man, my life changed forever when Pramukh Swami Maharaj looked into my eyes. Pramukh Swami Maharaj had an impact on me, but I did not appreciate that he would have such a deep impact on my part of the world. When devotion exists, it will move mountains in order for objectives to be achieved. I have come across many organisations, but none match this organisation. Pramukh Swami’s breath has brought a wind of change for us. I hope we can have some of the same love that Pramukh Swami and Mahant Swami give to everyone.”

H.E. Dr Bassam Alkhatib, Ambassador of the Syrian Arab Republic to India, said, “Human values lie in our heart, so we can know our future. Pramukh Swami Maharaj spread these human values around the world. I believe that celebrating the diversity of our cultures and religions is the best way to shape our future.

“Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s relationship with God was most natural, but his relationship with people was supernatural, and he led them to God. He believed in peace and equality and spread that around the world. This was reflected in his instruction after the Akshardham terrorist attack to leave no mark of the tragedy visible so that not a single visitor would remember the violent incident.”

Mr. Ylias Akbaraly, Chairman & CEO of Groupe Sipromad in Madagascar, said, “When I visited Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar, I was left speechless. It is so impressive that you have all these people yet no clamour or chaos, no litter; everyone is so calm and disciplined. This is the impact of Pramukh Swami Maharaj. This Nagar is a university of the world. What is happening here, I have not seen anywhere in the world.

“I have seen Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s life. He lived the values of peace, harmony, humility, betterment and sharing. That is why he could transmit them so effortlessly and so widely. Pramukh Swami Maharaj invested time and effort in our children, teaching them the importance of education, helping and sharing.

“Every time I sit with BAPS swamis, I learn so much. They speak of love, friendship, education, and forging a better future for our world.”

Dr Aman Puri, Consul General of India in Dubai, said, “The values of tolerance, peace, non-violence, harmony and selfless service are what Pramukh Swami Maharaj stood for, and BAPS is spreading these values across the globe. I have visited several BAPS centres and temples in various countries which attract people from all faiths. This is truly remarkable.

“In Dubai, we are witnessing the rise of the largest Hindu stone temple in the Middle East, which is a historic milestone for UAE and India’s relationship and for UAE’s Indian community. Not only Indians but absolutely everybody is looking forward to the temple, which will truly help spread the noble values which Pramukh Swami Maharaj stood for.”

Dr. S. Jaishankar, Indian Minister of External Affairs, shared, “The world called Pramukh Swami Maharaj ‘the People’s guru’ and ‘the global guru’ because he had travelled to over 50 countries, visited more than 17,000 cities and villages, established more than 1,200 mandirs, and wrote more than 750,000 letters. He met global leaders and kings, but also ordinary and poor people whom he embraced. As a result of his efforts, BAPS is taking India and the world forward.

“The Abu Dhabi temple story was referred to as a miracle. It is. It is also diplomacy and relationships, a story of hearts and minds, and a story of the generosity of kings. But ultimately, it is the result of divine Providence. Abu Dhabi’s temple is one miracle, and the second will happen in Bahrain. This is something greater than a miracle. This temple was the dream and prediction of Pramukh Swami Maharaj. BAPS temples are being built across the world, including in Paris, South Africa, Thailand and elsewhere.

“My first experience of BAPS was witnessing the construction of Swaminarayan Akshardham in New Delhi. All of Delhi’s residents were surprised to see such a beautiful mandir – so immense, so clean, and running so smoothly. When I became the ambassador of India to America, I visited the BAPS Swaminarayan mandir in Los Angeles. The atmosphere and people were such that while I had planned to spend 30 minutes, I spent three hours.”

“Last year, when the war erupted in Ukraine, around 20,000 Indian students were stranded in the cold. They needed to be brought home. While the Indian government was trying to decide what to do, BAPS brought volunteers from 11 countries to the Polish border and served hot meals three times a day. I was meeting other ministers of bordering countries who still remember the selfless spirit of BAPS volunteers who helped not only other Indians but people of other countries and ethnicities.

“When I think of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha and Pramukh Swami Maharaj, I see four big concepts: 1) Compassion, 2) Service, 3) Community and 4) Humanity. Firstly, BAPS is both local and global because it is connected to the land wherever it serves the people. They create their own identity without discriminating against anyone. Secondly, BAPS also employs technology and modern methods while remaining faithful to its traditions, culture, heritage and values. The balance and symbiosis of technology with tradition can be seen in the temples BAPS builds around the world. Thirdly, BAPS also acts and leads by example. And fourthly, BAPS operates on a grand scale but at the end of the day, every aspect of the community and guru is personal. The personal touch is everywhere. One needs a different mindset to never forget each individual. This is what is unique about BAPS.”

Mr. Jaishankar also highlighted three main challenges of the world today – conflict, COVID and climate – and elaborated upon their solutions through peace, progress and prosperity.

After speaking about India’s role in leading the next G20 through the motto of ‘Vasudhaiva Katumbakam’ – the world is one family – and India’s role in demonstrating ‘vaccine amity’ with the world by sharing millions of doses to those in need, Mr. Jaishankar added, “People say that India has become ‘the pharmacy of the world’, but we are also ‘the pharmacy for the world’. We should do things for ourselves, but we should also think of other countries. This is what we learn from Pramukh Swami Maharaj and this Nagar.”

Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari of Shree Kshetra Dharmsthala, Karnataka, said, “Pramukh Swami Maharaj brought society and religion together. I have never seen such a simple swami anywhere. Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s message was to be humble, friendly, courteous and helpful to others, and his devotees follow this very well. If this spirit can be spread to others and other religions, then great work can be done.”

Thomas Perez, Former US Secretary of Labour, Former Chair of the Democratic National Committee, and Former Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights (USA), said, “Pramukh Swami Maharaj was one of the world’s greatest spiritual leaders, global citizens, interfaith leaders, and far-reaching humanitarians. His life was his message – a message of peace, hope, tolerance, and most importantly, selfless service – service to others, service to all, and service to the most vulnerable among us regardless of colour, creed, and caste, no matter who they are. That was his life. It was a powerful reminder of how a single person born in the humblest circumstances imaginable can truly transform the world through an unwavering commitment to the values of social justice, human rights, and interfaith harmony.

“From his engagement in mandirs, churches, mosques, synagogues, cathedrals, and gurudwaras, Pramukh Swami Maharaj transcended any single religion. Rather, he was always that divine spark that resides within each one of us and binds us together. Presidents, Prime Ministers and Popes sought him out, seeking his profound witness and steady guidance in a world that is oftentimes utterly bereft of guidance.

“He ran the BAPS global organisation for decades with his reflexive humility and vision, growing it into a global force for good in dozens of countries globally. BAPS has become an indispensable pillar in those communities where you operate. Whether it is answering the common cause of humanity in Ukraine or elsewhere, your service recognizes no boundaries or borders.

“Pramukh Swami Maharaj will forever live on not just through BAPS but through the millions he inspired through his example of fierce dedication to the uplift of others. His legacy is in every hospital that he built, in every village he served, in every heart he touched, and in every life he transformed. It is difficult to encapsulate all that he was and all that he meant to the millions who loved him and learned from him from across the world.

“Let us live all our lives the way Pramukh Swami Maharaj lived every single day—that ‘In the joy of others lies our own’ and ‘unity exists in diversity.’ Deceptively simple though these messages may be, they are potent in their impact. Diversity is something to embrace, not fear. Diversity is what has made our global community so strong.

“I offer my congratulations for the grand success of this festival. I am in awe of your volunteerism. You are the future of not only India but of the world.”

In his blessings to the assembly, His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj firstly appreciated the BAPS devotees from the Gulf Countries who presented the inspiring programme today. He said, “I have been a first-hand witness to Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s selfless and harmonising travels to the Gulf Countries, which has resulted in the BAPS temple in Abu Dhabi. The mandir will be a unique contribution to the local community and a home of peace. A BAPS temple will also be built in Bahrain, thanks to the gracious support of local leaders, organisations and the community.

“Pramukh Swami Maharaj would say that all religions are good and all countries are good. If we are good, then everything will be good.

“When I was in the UAE [in 2019], the Sheikh lovingly welcomed us. I remember that he was overcome with emotion at our meeting. I, too, did not think that he was different from us. We are all one family.

“We are grateful to have Jaishankarji in our assembly here today. He has spread the goodwill of India across the world. I pray that all the dignitaries gathered here can serve their communities and countries further. May God bless everyone.”

Women’s Day 1: Celebrating Women Empowerment

5 Jan. 2023, Thursday, Ahmedabad, India

Hundreds of women from BAPS centres around the world presented an inspirational programme titled “Women’s Day: Celebrating Women’s Empowerment” before an audience of tens of thousands at Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar on 5 January 2023. Through devotional songs, dramas, dances, videos and speeches by women dignitaries of various fields, they paid tribute to Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s immense efforts to foster the holistic empowerment and development of millions of girls and women worldwide.

When 19th-century women in Gujarat struggled with social, political and economic disempowerment, Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s works inspired the holistic upliftment and spiritual development of countless women, providing them with a public platform for overall progress. Pramukh Swami Maharaj continued this work and expanded it globally. An ardent champion of women’s education, he inspired the construction of large girls’ schools in Karamsad and Randesan, Gujarat, where thousands of girls avail of the best educational resources tailored to cultural and spiritual development. Additionally, through thousands of global centres for girls, young women and women, over 60 young women’s skill-development conventions and over 100 talent development platforms, BAPS has nurtured the development of strong, independent women who are keystones in their families and successful in their careers.

Through Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s inspiration, the monthly ‘Premvati’ women’s magazine has provided a global platform for women’s voices on social and spiritual development for more than 50 years. The innovative BAPS WILL (Women’s Ideals for Learning and Living) programme has been helping women of all ages through lectures, group discussions and seminars on childcare, management, healthcare, academics, finances, and many other issues. Moreover, the BAPS Women’s Wing has actively channelled women’s creative energies for dowry relief, de-addiction, environmental conservation, festivals, and a variety of social and cultural services.

Glimpses of all this can be seen in various aspects of Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar. At the Women’s Empowerment Pavilion, seminars, dialogues and art forums are organised daily. In the Bal Nagari, 270 girls present a mesmerising musical show titled the ‘Sea of Suvarna’ based on Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s message that prayer and hard work lead to success. The 25 ‘Premvati Food Courts’ on the festival grounds are wholly managed and run by 2,200 women volunteers who serve hundreds of thousands daily. Tens of Thousands of women volunteers have played an integral role in the many aspects of the creation and management of Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar.

Evening Assembly

The Women’s Day evening assembly began at 5.15pm with BAPS women from Ahmedabad, Mumbai and the UK singing devotional prayers to the accompaniment of Indian and western instruments. Thereafter, 31 girls performed a classical dance to Vedic hymns expressing the glory of the enlightened guru followed by women performing a medley of dances from different regions of India. BAPS women then presented a drama, “The 7th of December,” recounting true stories of Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s holistic and profound impact on the lives of women. He saved marriages, transformed hatred to love, and provided divine experiences and counsel. Women of all castes, classes, ages and professional backgrounds found their lives transformed through their spiritual association with Pramukh Swami Maharaj.

Several distinguished guests also paid homage to Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s work of women’s empowerment:

Anandiben Patel, Honourable Governor of Uttar Pradesh and Former Chief Minister of Gujarat said, “This is an excellent event for all women. 33,000 women and girls have volunteered in the making of this festival! Only Pramukh Swami Maharaj recognised the true potential and power of women, and he took steps to inspire them to cultivate values and virtues, service and devotion.

“Pramukh Swami Maharaj was humility personified. Though global leaders flocked to meet him, he would travel to the homes of labourers, tribals and the poorest in society. Pramukh Swami Maharaj teaches us to care for, listen to, and help everyone, whether they are employees or family members. I have been personally touched by Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s divine love. As we love our daughters, we should also ensure all girls from 9 to 14 receive the HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer. Moreover, I request the ladies to take the drama enacted here across all of India to educate women everywhere on these profound messages about education, values, and virtues.

“I was astounded to observe the children managing the magnificent Bal Nagari. The children here possess the strength to do wonders. We should all recognise our children’s immense potential and give them attention and guidance to further encourage them as our nation’s future rests on their shoulders.”

Honourable Minister of State in the Ministry of Textiles and Ministry of Railways of India Darshana Jardosh, said, “I am overawed by the grandeur of Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar. As the daughter of a photographer, the beauty of every nook and cranny of this place is imprinted in my mind. The feeling of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (the whole world is one family) that one experiences here shall be a partner in our collective creation of a vibrant India. The exhibitions here inspire one to imbibe the noble values from Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s life.

“When I see the active contribution of the female volunteers in so much of Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar, I am further convinced that Pramukh Swami Maharaj was a torchbearer of women’s empowerment. A woman takes equal care of her maternal as well as her matrimonial home. Similarly, in Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar, women volunteers are taking care of everyone. From the gardens and cleanliness to the food stalls and lighting, every important aspect of this place has benefitted from the contributions of the female volunteers. With their minds, pure sentiments and dedication, women from India and abroad are contributing to their communities, their families, and the Nagar, where the great work of inspiring the next generation is being accomplished. I am happy that the Railways Ministry has made its own small contribution to memorialising Pramukh Swami Maharaj by renaming a train from Ahmedabad to New Delhi, the Akshardham Express.”

Honourable Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture of India Meenakshi Lekhi said, “Pramukh Swami Maharaj was a guru who inspired devotion and social service. Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar provides us a vision of what society should be like.

“As I went around the Nagar, I was drawn to the messages in the films and exhibitions. Pramukh Swami Maharaj taught that devotion with hard work is the path to success, and he did this so well that, today, Indians all over the world are so successful. This message of prayer and hard work was beautifully presented in the ‘Sea of Suvarna’ show performed by hundreds of young girls.

“Indians are hardworking people who also believe in the strength of spirituality, and hence their motivation to serve society. No matter what part of the world Indians travel to, they carry these values with them and become valuable members of their respective communities. This inspiration comes from organisations like BAPS who help individuals retain and reinforce these ancient Hindu universal values. Pramukh Swami Maharaj guided that, no matter what we do with our lives, we should contribute to our communities. We should do everything with the spirit of serving society. Pramukh Swami Maharaj did this himself without distinction. He could meet Prince Charles in a palace and also visit a young boy’s home in a village.”

Professor and Chair of the Anthropology Department at Adelphi University, USA, Dr. Hanna Hea-Sun Kim said, “Thirty years ago, as a student, I attended the Yogi Shatabdi Celebrations in Gandhinagar. Today, as a professor of anthropology, I am still a student of BAPS.

“This is an extraordinary, overwhelmingly beautiful place. The women’s and children’s contributions to the Nagar are inspired by the love of Pramukh Swami Maharaj. With love, he taught all of us the message throughout the Bal Nagari that prayer and hard work leads to success.  While success is never easy, we can always ask for help. It could be from a trusted friend or your Guru. But don’t be afraid to ask for help. Success is not about being rich, but about knowing who you are and what is your goal.”

Her Excellency Pastor Dr. Dorcas Rigathi, Second Lady of Kenya, shared, “Empowerment only comes from knowing God and one’s purpose. You have discovered yourselves, and that is why you have gathered together here so that you can celebrate the life of a man of God who championed the life of women. Pramukh Swami Maharaj is a champion of women’s development.

“I have seen women from India and Kenya. I believe that India and Kenya share similar cultural and religious lifestyles. A woman is a symbol of power when she has faith, serves the world, and sacrifices for her family.  When a woman understands her purpose and is attentive to the spiritual path, the whole family thrives.

“Nothing loving can enter this earth without a woman. Therefore, if we desire to see change in the world, we need to understand that women are central and critical to everything. If women are left behind, the world will never experience peace. Furthermore, if we want to see change in the world, we must also change the way we bring up our men. They must be taught to respect women, not to abuse or misuse them. The mentoring of a boy is done by a woman. To transform the world, we must become the transforming agent.

“Today, as I went around this beautiful, inspiring place, I realised that you are celebrating the life of a great man of God who emanated God’s light, who was not only humble but who cared for everyone – children, women, and the addicted. He lived a life of sacrifice and service.”

Judicial Member of the Lokpal Committee of India, Former Chief Justice of Manipur High Court and former Justice of Gujarat High Court, Honourable Justice Abhilasha Kumari said, “Pramukh Swami Maharaj was the epitome of saintliness, love, compassion, holiness, magnanimity, and empathy for all human beings – indeed for all living beings. Such a person does not come upon this earth very often, but when he does, he leaves an indelible mark in the hearts and minds of people through the transformations he brings about in people’s lives. His legacy will last for generations to come, indeed forever.

“I had the good fortune of having the darshan of Pramukh Swami Maharaj several times. I can say from my own experience that any person who has his darshan even once will be drawn into his holy spirit and engulfed into his aura. This month-long celebration is a beautiful and befitting tribute to Pramukh Swami Maharaj and his teachings to better each individual and elevate every soul to fulfil life’s purpose and reach the culmination of one’s spiritual journey. The foundations are laid in childhood, and thus Pramukh Swami Maharaj emphasised the inculcation of values in children.

“From my two days at the Nagar, I am amazed, astounded, and awestruck at what must have gone into making the Nagar what it is today – a marvel of art and technology with shows that are meaningful and impart knowledge to all. This celebration reflects the ideals cherished by Pramukh Swami Maharaj, and it has a takeaway for each person who visits.

“We must not forget the inspiration which has made it possible. His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj has overseen every aspect of the festival preparations that have been planned by the sadhus, who are invisible and silent catalysts that have guided this entire programme. The volunteers have executed the plans that have been meticulously laid down. The discipline, hygiene, politeness, courtesy, and feeling of welcome that we get here are exemplary. I bow down at the feet of Pramukh Swami Maharaj and hope that his compassion will always flow upon this earth and touch the hearts of everyone, that we might all become better human beings.”

Secretary of the Auroville Foundation Dr. Jayanti S. Ravi (IAS) added, “Pramukh Swami Maharaj was the living embodiment of pure divinity.

“Today, I saw little girls and women in this Nagar as volunteers. When I saw the girls from London who prepared a portrait of Pramukh Swami Maharaj using coloured bubbles, I was touched by their patience, hard work, teamwork and attention to detail as an offering to their guru. If this sort of devotion can be spread everywhere, it can transform the world.

“When I completed my PhD thesis on eGovernance, I had it offered to Pramukh Swami Maharaj. I felt so blessed that he sanctified it with flower petals and marked it with red vermillion. I have still kept those dried flowers because these blessings and memories have made a big difference in my life. Even for my latest book, ‘Sanity in Sanitation’, which has a foreword by Prime Minister Narendrabhai Modi, I sought the blessings of Mahant Swami Maharaj. He wrote: ‘Bhagwan Swaminarayan taught that, along with physical hygiene, moral purity is equally important.’ This was another wonderful opportunity for me.

“I mentioned this morning in the conference that for so many volunteers to serve together without clashes means that the power of God is working through them. Anyone who employs these volunteers will definitely benefit, too. The impact of this Nagar is being felt across the world. Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s every hour, minute and second was spent in the service of society and prayer. I hope that everyone is inspired by his life of humility, service and faith.”

Director of BAPS Vidyamandir, Randesan and Overseer of BAPS Women’s Activities Dr. Neetaben Shah expressed her thanks to the dignitaries, the young and energetic cultural programme team, the volunteers, and Pramukh Swami Maharaj for providing this opportunity to all.

Other dignitaries present on stage included:

  • Ranjanben Bhatt, MP Vadodara
  • Sunaina Tomar (IAS), Additional Chief Secretary, Social Justice & Empowerment Department Government of Gujarat
  • Payalben Kukrani, MLA Gujarat
  • Kanchanben Radadiya, MLA Gujarat
  • Darshana Vaghela, MLA Gujarat
  • Irene Achieng Oloo, Deputy Ambassador of Kenya to India
  • Gitaben J. Patel, Deputy Mayor, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation

Women Empowerment and Hindu Socio-Spiritual Traditions

5 Jan. 2023, Thursday, Ahmedabad, India

On the occasion of Pramukh Swami Maharaj centenary celebrations, an international conference was organized on “Women Empowerment and Hindu Socio-Spiritual Traditions” in Ahmedabad.  The conference was organized by the BAPS Swaminarayan Research Institute, New Delhi, in collaboration with Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey (S.N.D.T.) Women’s University, Mumbai. The conference was attended by scholars and students from around the world—including universities in India, Australia, the United States of America, and the United Kingdom. They presented original research and engaged in meaningful dialogue on women’s rights, representation, and empowerment.

The Inaugural Session

The conference commenced with the performance of the deep pragatya by Dr. Jayanti Ravi, the Secretary of the Auroville Foundation in Tamil Nadu and a former IAS officer of Gujarat, Dr. Neerja Gupta, the Vice Chancellor at the Sanchi University of Buddhist-Indic Studies, Dr. Ami Upadhyay, the Vice-Chancellor at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University, Ahmedabad, Prof. Hemixa Rao, the former Vice-chancellor of Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University in Patan, Dr. Ruby Ojha, the Pro Vice-chancellor at S.N.D.T. Women’s University in Mumbai, Dr. Hanna Kim, Chair of the Anthropology Department at Adelphi University in New York, Shri Vanitha Datla, a Vice Chairperson & Managing Director at Elico Ltd. Hyderabad, and Dr. Neeta Shah, the Director of BAPS Women’s Swaminarayan School in Randesan and the Overseer of BAPS women’s activities.

In her welcome address, Dr. Ruby Ojha, the Pro Vice-chancellor at S.N.D.T. Women’s University in Mumbai, elaborated on the presumptions that have raised contemporary concerns about gender inequity. She mentioned that it contrasts the feminine divine present in ancient Indian tradition. She suggested that “contemporary gender problems need to be addressed by reviving those lost values inherent within Indic religious systems. Men and women are not competitors.”

Thereafter, a special guest address was delivered by Dr. Neerja Gupta, the Vice Chancellor at the Sanchi University of Buddhist-Indic Studies. She explored the practices and beliefs within Indian religious traditions that provide feminist ideals and contrasted them with other traditions. She explained, “We need to rethink our own tradition to find gender-equal ideas. Anything social must be guided by the spiritual. According to Lord Krishna’s message in the Gita, compassion is the root of dharma.”

In her keynote address, Dr. Hanna Kim, the Chair of the Anthropology Department at Adelphi University in New York, presented on the role of the BAPS Yuvati Talim Kendra (Women’s Training Center) in empowering young women to attain “greater contentment and autonomy in life by cultivating techniques found in the Swaminarayan toolkit for navigating everyday lives.” She elaborated how “the BAPS Yuvati Talim Kendra provided a platform to give voice to women who could not previously speak in public.” By comparing the famous writer Virginia Woolf’s and Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s worlds, she stated: “Pramukh Swami Maharaj was ahead of his times in valuing human capacity regardless of caste, class, and gender.” Then, through a case study, she presented the “individual attention and care” provided to young women by the teachers at the training center.

Dr. Jayanti Ravi, the Secretary of the Auroville Foundation in Tamil Nadu and a former IAS officer of Gujarat, presented the inaugural address and cited the examples of Andal and Meerabai as exemplary women figures of bhakti traditions. She further highlighted the inherent power of Indian devotional traditions and spirituality to induce inward transformation. She concluded by asking the audience to immerse themselves in a devotional song by Mirabai.

Thereafter, Dr. Neeta Shah, the Director of BAPS Women’s Swaminarayan School in Randesan and the Overseer of BAPS women’s activities, showcased the progression of women’s activities since the time of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. Thereafter, Dr. Ranjana Harish, a Former Professor and the Head of the English Department at Gujarat University in Ahmedabad, narrated the story of Bahinabai, a woman devotee of Varkari Sant Tukaram. She recounted how “her (Bahinabai’s) husband became a disciple after recognizing her devotional and spiritual potential.” Dr. Harish further showed how Bhagwan Swaminarayan promoted women’s rights to perform bhakti, attain liberation, and “be recognized as persons worthy of human dignity.” She further explained how Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s inspirational letter “supported her during a stressful time in her own life.”

He highlighted their continued support for empowering women. Dr. Bhakti Mamtora, the Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at the College of Wooster, then underscored the significance of the living guru in the transmission of Indian culture and the formation of Hindu diasporic communities abroad in the context of BAPS women. Thereafter, Shri Meera Trivedi, a student at Shree Somnath Sanskrit University, emphasized the need to explore feminine and performative genres in bhakti literature. She also portrayed the role of Sahajanand Swami in empowering female devotees like Jivubai, Ladubai, and Kushalkuvarbai to prominence. Shri Nirali Patel, a student at Shree Somnath Sanskrit University, then examined “how the Swaminarayan female bhakti can forge a bond that transcends the spatiotemporal plane.”

The Concluding Session

In the final session, Dr. Hemixa Rao, the former Vice-chancellor of Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University, Patan, summarized various presentations at the conference and emphasized “the role of both men and women in furthering women’s empowerment.” Stressing the need “to remove the inferiority complex and instill pride and confidence in women,” she highlighted Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s role in fostering a sense of “ideological independence” in women. In conclusion, Dr. Jyotindra Dave, the Director of BAPS Research Institute in Delhi, thanked all volunteers—specifically Prof. Jayesh Mandanka, Prof. Anand Acharya, Dr. Neeta Shah, and Shri Meenaben Patel—for their tireless effort in organizing the conference. Upon emphasizing the influential role that his mother and other women in his family played in his life, he thanked all the scholars who attended and contributed to the meaningful discussions at the conference.

Planning & Construction Conclave

5 Jan. 2023, Thursday, Ahmedabad, India

Eminent Indian architect and lead designer of the new ‘Central Vista Redevelopment’ in New Delhi, Padma Shri Bimal Patel joined more than 700 civil engineers and architects on 5 January 2023 for a special one-day conference at Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar in Ahmedabad.

The ‘Planning and Construction Conclave’ was organized by the Gujarat Institute of Civil Engineers and Architects (GICEA) and BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS).

The conference was led by a panel of prominent speakers, namely Dr. Vatsal Patel (Chief Urban Planner with Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and President, GICEA), Padma Shri Dr. Bimal Patel, (Architect and President, CEPT University), and Vijaykumar Kulkarni (Founder-Director, Low Carbon Construction and Forum Co-Chair, Imperial College of Information Technology and Business). Other notable panelists included P.S. Patel (Director and CEO, PSP Projects Ltd.), Ar. Brijesh Bhatha (Lead Design Practice Ground Design, Faculty at CEPT University), and Ar. Rajan Rawal (Professor, CEPT University, Fellow of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers).

In his welcome address, Dr. Vatsal Patel, Chief Urban Planner of AMC and President of GICEA, briefly elaborated upon the activities of GICEA. He further said, “Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar has several aspects that can serve as an inspiration for architects and civil engineers.”

In his keynote address, renowned architect and President of CEPT University Padmashri Dr. Bimal Patel shared his insights on the need and features of the newly developed ‘Central Vista Redevelopment’ project in New Delhi. He said, “One of the main objectives of the Central Vista Redevelopment was to modernize the facilities of the Indian Parliament. This had become necessary because of the lack of space to accommodate the more than 500 Members of Parliament and the pervious ad hoc additions.” He further shared details of the upcoming New Parliament House, the newly named ‘Kartavyapath’ (formerly ‘Rajpath’), and new additions to the Central Vista area.

Vijaykumar Kulkarni, Founder-Director of Low Carbon Construction and Forum Co-Chair of the Imperial College of Information Technology and Business, delivered an address on “Climate Change and the Role of Architects and Civil Engineers.” He said, “Factors such as a rise in population, the subsequent increase of resource utilization, and the continuing migration of people from rural to urban areas due to occupational necessities are contributing to an overall increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This is leading to global warming and thereby resulting in floods, cyclones, wildfires, heatwaves and an overall decrease in human productivity and a loss of jobs. To reduce GHG emissions, we should focus on using renewable resources, reducing carbon emissions, and increasing use of energy-efficient equipment in our new projects. Personally, adopting a vegetarian diet can also significantly reduce one’s carbon footprint.”

At the end of the session, Dr. Bimal Patel and Vijaykumar Kulkarni answered questions from the audience.

In an inspirational talk delivered by Gnanvatsaldas Swami, a leading spiritual motivational speaker of BAPS, he said, “We can learn how hard work and immense faith in God can produce phenomenal results from the life of Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Although Pramukh Swami Maharaj did not have an extensive formal education, his vast experience from all walks of life and his personal spirituality lifted BAPS to become an international organization. In 45 years of his spiritual leadership, Pramukh Swami Maharaj travelled to more than 50 countries, sanctified 250,000 homes, replied to 750,000 letters, created 1300 societal institutions (temples, hospitals, schools, hostels, etc.), initiated 1,000 sadhus and created a permanent force of 50,000 volunteers. Through his immense hard work and spiritual vision, Pramukh Swami Maharaj created an exemplary infrastructure and systemized the organization. He taught us in BAPS to always strive to do our best and to never be inflated by praise, but always seek out ways to improve so that we can better serve society as our devotion to God.

“Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar is a perfect reflection of Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s life. Every guest is praising its management, cleanliness, etc., but we are constantly monitoring the festival and seeing how we can still improve. Again, this comes from what Pramukh Swami Maharaj taught us about introspection, humility, accepting constructive feedback, and improving ourselves in the service of others and God. Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar can serve as an inspiration to all architects and civil engineers.”

An interesting panel discussion on ‘Sustainable Development’ was conducted by P.S. Patel (Director and CEO of PSP Projects), Ar. Brijesh Bhatha (Lead Design Practice Ground Design, Faculty at CEPT University) and Ar. Rajan Rawal (Professor at CEPT University and Fellow of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers), and moderated by Dr. Vatsal Patel, Chief Urban Planner of AMC and President of GICEA. They began by unanimously acknowledging that Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar was the most appropriate platform to have this discussion since 85% of the material used in the Nagar will be recycled and reused.

The panelists further discussed important subjects, such as defining sustainable development, finding alternate sustainable materials, energy efficiency, and defining parameters for ensuring sustainable development in government and private construction.

Today’s event is the eleventh in a series of 14 such conferences for professionals of various fields, including doctors, lawyers, industrialists, technocrats and entrepreneurs. It is a testament to the progressive mindset of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, whose work and teachings touched people from all walks of life, to ensure the holistic success and happiness of everyone in society.

Gujarat Day: Celebrating Glorious Gujarat

4 Jan. 2023, Wednesday, Ahmedabad, India

Renowned Gujarati folk singers and litterateurs lyrically extolled the spiritual, social, and cultural contributions to Gujarat of His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj on “Gujarat Day: Celebrating Glorious Gujarat” at Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar on 4 January 2023. Tens of thousands gathered to listen to them and other dignitaries as they remembered the legacy of Bhagwan Swaminarayan and his fifth spiritual successor, Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Bhagwan Swaminarayan had a profound impact on Gujarat’s religious, social, and cultural landscape. Pramukh Swami Maharaj continued his legacy by continuously working for the holistic development of Gujarat through spiritual, social, cultural, educational, medical and environmental services, the creation of mandirs such as Akshardham, de-addiction campaigns, tribal welfare activities, and countless other social and relief efforts.

Evening Assembly

The evening assembly began at 4.45 pm, in which Gujarat’s renowned folk singers such as Hemant Chauhan and Kirtidan Gadhvi performed a medley of devotional hymns. Rajbha Gadhvi enthralled the audience with his unique musical performance, while Osman Mir sang his favourite devotional kirtans on Pramukh Swami Maharaj.

Then, distinguished guests paid homage to Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s contributions to Gujarat.

Renowned Gujarati motivational speaker and author Shailesh Sagpariya said, “Pramukh Swami Maharaj elevated Gujarati from a regional language to an international one by speaking in Gujarati at the United Nations during the Millennium World Peace Summit of Religious Leaders where delegates heard Gujarati for the first time. He also ensured that Gujarati is taught in mandirs across the world. Gujarat has gifted our nation with a number of prominent personalities: namely, the father of the nation – Mahatma Gandhiji, the creator of a united India – Sardar Patel, the first Field Marshal of independent India – Sam Manekshaw, the father of the Indian space programme – Vikram Sarabhai, and the current leader and visionary of a new India – Narendra Modi. Bhagwan Swaminarayan made Gujarat his home and today we are celebrating Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s contributions to Gujarat.”

Renowned Gujarati folk singer Padma Shri Bhikhudan Gadhvi said, “Pramukh Swami Maharaj instilled values in people and taught that the inculcation of dharma leads to the eventual eradication of ego, which spreads peace in society. Pramukh Swami Maharaj was the ideal saint who granted society and individuals peace by awakening them to the path of righteousness. I would often sing a folk song before Pramukh Swami Maharaj with the words, ‘God gave us this priceless soil, water, and air, all for free!’ —explaining how compassionate God is on us! Saints like Pramukh Swami Maharaj and Mahant Swami Maharaj have showered this compassion on us, giving us all we need. Thus, we must have faith in and seek the refuge of such a holy saint.”

Acclaimed Gujarati humourist Padma Shri Shahabuddin Rathod said, “All religions have their respective distinctive attributes —the Swaminarayan faith sees all other faiths with respect. I had a very close relationship with Pramukh Swami Maharaj. He contributed to society in so many ways. He made major contributions to a girls’ school that I was helping create in the early 1990s. When Pramukh Swami Maharaj was weighed against sugar which was then weighed against gold in London, he donated all of that to the establishment of a new medical school in Karamsad. In people’s life, the ‘I’ is always capital. But for Pramukh Swami Maharaj, there was no capital ‘I’. His whole life, he inspired us to get rid of our ego. Thus, he was able to laugh so effortlessly and innocently.”

Head of the Dada Bhagwan Foundation Deepakbhai Desai shared, “All Pramukh Swami Maharaj thought about was providing peace to every person he met. Saints like him dissolve our anxieties and sorrows. Pramukh Swami Maharaj embodied detachment and transcended ignorance. He was Brahmaswarup – the form of Aksharbrahma. Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s devotion and surrenderance to his gurus were unparalleled. There was nothing else for him. When he so devoted himself to his guru, thousands were inspired to devote themselves, too. Pramukh Swami Maharaj experience God through his gurus. He lived solely to please his gurus and serve people. This is true knowledge.”

Former Cabinet Minister of Gujarat Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said, “Pramukh Swami Maharaj has increased the glory of Gujarat and Gujarati society. When I sought blessings from Pramukh Swami Maharaj to overcome the difficulties facing the Narmada Dam Project, he requested all BAPS mandirs worldwide to chant God’s name every morning and evening. Due to his blessings, prayers and efforts, the Narmada Dam today serves millions of people in Gujarat and beyond.

“Pramukh Swami Maharaj preserved Hindu culture by creating temples worldwide with weekly assemblies that nurtured spiritual values in children and adults. He also fostered such virtues in Indian children to such an extent that their parents were inspired to transform their lives. Pramukh Swami Maharaj was not just a man for this age; he was a spiritual luminary for the ages. We have not seen God, but we saw a God-like person in Pramukh Swami Maharaj.”

Former Deputy Chief Minister of Gujarat Nitinbhai Patel said, “Millions from India and abroad were attracted to Pramukh Swami Maharaj because of his love for all. Gujarat was hit by a massive earthquake in 2001. When the earthquake-affected had not even comprehended what had happened, Pramukh Swami Maharaj already had people on the ground carrying out relief efforts and serving hot meals to all in just a few hours. His relief activities were unprecedented.

“Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Narendra Modi have raised the profile and glory of Gujarat worldwide. But in the religious sphere, it is Pramukh Swami Maharaj who has gained the respect and adoration of millions of leaders and ordinary people and subsequently made Gujarat a place to be proud of. These four Gujaratis are the pride of Gujarat. Pramukh Swami belonged not only to Gujarat but to the world, and his teachings will stay with us forever.”

Former Chief Minister of Gujarat Vijaybhai Rupani said, “Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s life was for the salvation of all. Through his life, he inspired people to imbibe integrity, honesty, morality, harmony and peace. Everyone believed that they had a close relationship with Pramukh Swami Maharaj. This shows that he was one with the people – a people’s guru. He wrote hundreds of thousands of letters and reached hundreds of thousands of homes consoling, guiding and inspiring people. He initiated over 1,000 swamis. His life was centered around prayers and perseverance. His pure character inspired the transformation of others’ lives. Thus, even though he lacked significant formal education, highly educated people like President Abdul Kalam accepted him as their guru.

“When terrorists entered Swaminarayan Akshardham in Gandhinagar, it was an attack on Hinduism. But Pramukh Swami Maharaj appealed to the public for peace, rescuing society from the communal violence that the terrorists had clearly intended.

“Today, Gujarat is a role model of progress. People say Gujarat is powerful, progressive and growing — and Pramukh Swami Maharaj was one of the significant contributors. He united the people of Gujarat and gave them direction. Though his Centenary Celebrations are only for one month, they will inspire generations to come. Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s life and work have steered our state and Hindu culture toward progress, pride and inspiration.”

His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj said, “Pramukh Swami Maharaj was like a hub of all virtues, so whatever glory we can extol of his remains insufficient. He sacrificed his entire life for society, keeping not even a single second for himself. Everything was for the sake of others.

“We offer our respects to everyone who has contributed to Gujarat’s development. Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s contribution to Gujarat’s development was immense and everyone is aware of his service to society during natural disasters. He also made Herculean efforts to ensure the entire state of Gujarat would have clean water due to the success of the Narmada Dam project. His efforts were selfless and motivated only by his heartfelt sentiments and compassion for the suffering of the people of Gujarat. He was also inspired by witnessing Yogiji Maharaj’s intense desire for the successful completion of the Narmada Dam project. He built many hospitals, schools, hostels and mandirs in Gujarat to foster the educational, health and spiritual welfare of the people of Gujarat. The state of Gujarat will remain forever indebted to him for his immense services.”
