Swaminarayan Literature Day: Celebrating Eternal Wisdom

26 Dec. 2022, Monday, Ahmedabad, India

Academic conference held on the unique contribution of Swaminarayan literature to spirituality, daily living, literature and history

Pramukh Swami Maharaj honoured for inspiring literary compositions on spiritual and social awareness through learned BAPS swamis

Impressive contribution of Swaminarayan literature also serves as a means to preserve and promote Sanskrit

Tens of thousands gathered at Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar on 26 December to celebrate the vast contributions made by the Swaminarayan monastic tradition to the fields of Gujarati and spiritual literature which has positively influenced the aesthetic, social, ethical and spiritual dimensions of countless people’s lives across the world over the last two centuries. Eminent scholars and spiritual luminaries paid tribute to His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s efforts to continue the rich literary legacy of Bhagwan Swaminarayan by inspiring innumerable literary compositions through his learned swamis.

Swaminarayan literature is assuming a prominent place in the centuries-old literary journey of humanity. Bhagwan Swaminarayan nurtured his swamis’ development in diverse fields such as literature, arts and music. He inspired scholarly swamis such as Muktanand Swami, Brahmanand Swami, Premanand Swami, Nishkulanand Swami and Nityanand Swami to compose poetic literary works which would serve as priceless guides to successful spiritual living. Today, their works continue to shine as jewels of Gujarati literature due to their literary calibre and spiritual profundity.

Noting the literary services of these swamis, well-known Professor Anantaraya Rawal states, “The Swaminarayan Sampraday of Gujarat continues to serve the literary field. The literary works of the leading and scholarly swamis of the BAPS Swaminarayan organisation cannot be underestimated.”

Famous historian, Mr. K. K. Dutt notes, “The text, ‘A Comprehensive History of India’ states that the sadhus of Bhagwan Swaminarayan have contributed greatly to Gujarati literature.”

The evening assembly began at 4.45 pm with prayers and devotional hymns.

BAPS scholar Adarshjivandas Swami narrated episodes from Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s life which illustrated how he embodied the ideals of discipleship toward his gurus.

Viveksagardas Swami, BAPS senior swami, scholar, author and witness to the unprecedented life and works of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, delivered a thought-provoking discourse on Swaminarayan literature. “At Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s behest, Swaminarayan swamis have prolifically produced a rich diversity of literature in a variety of languages, including Sanskrit, Prakrit, Hindi and Braj, of various styles, sentiments and ideas. Nearly 35,000 kirtans were composed by Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s swami-disciples. Their prolificness was not at the expense of quality.

“Eminent scholars of Gujarati literature have praised the literary qualities of Swaminarayan literature. Mahatma Gandhi included many hymns of Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s swami-disciples in his Ashram Bhajanavali, which he sang daily to gain spiritual inspiration. Swaminarayan literature was distinctive for being suffused with devotion. This literature was created not to dazzle aesthetically or impress with technical skill, but out of the depths of devotional feeling for the manifest God, Bhagwan Swaminarayan. Swaminarayan literature was also transformative, uplifting people’s lives and enlightening consciousness.

“Pramukh Swami Maharaj continued the vast contributions to Swaminarayan literature begun by Bhagwan Swaminarayan. Eighteen periodicals in many languages were established by Pramukh Swami Maharaj and are regularly read by more than 1 million people. BAPS has published more than 700 books. Additionally, Pramukh Swami Maharaj encouraged the production of scholarly literature clarifying Akshar Purushottam Darshan, such as in the Swaminarayan Bhashyam, which has been celebrated by the Kashi Vidvat Parishad as well as dozens of universities around the world.”

Dignitaries and scholars present in the assembly also paid tribute to Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s contribution to literature through their speeches.

Madhav Ramanuj, eminent poet and writer, said, “Every person’s personality reflects aspects of their parents; in Pramukh Swami Maharaj, we saw aspects of God. Meeting him felt like meeting a beloved family elder.  He created more than a thousand mandirs, but innumerable inner mandirs in the hearts of those who loved him. Our existence in his lifetime is our great fortune.”

Chandrakant Raghunath Patil, State President of BJP Gujarat, shared, “Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s work benefitted the whole world. The 80,000 volunteers selflessly serving here together as one will benefit the world with their inspiring example. Despite the hundreds of thousands visiting this campus daily, I have not seen any disorder. This event offers lessons on service, duty and compassion that should be learned by all.”

Ambrish Patel, President and Trustee of Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal (SVKM) Trust, said, “Experiencing this nagar has been the best moment of my life. Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s compassionate eyes touched the hearts of all, rich and poor. Only once in a millennium do such souls incarnate. I am amazed by this grand festival. The organization of this event is extraordinary. I do not think we shall see such a sight in India or throughout the world in the next hundred years.”

Sanjay Ghodawat, Founder and Chairman of Sanjay Ghodawat Group, said, “Pramukh Swami Maharaj was a philanthropist who always gave to society. He was resilient, teaching us how to move from negativity to positivity. He was ambitious, making the impossible possible. He was a mastermind, masterfully managing a vast organization. He inspired unity amongst all facets of society. His kindness taught us to always have compassion for others. His humility touched everyone’s hearts.”

Prof. Dr. Balwant Shantilal Jani, Honourable Chancellor of Dr. Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya, said, “Pramukh Swami Maharaj was unparalleled. Only Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s pure love could inspire thousands of 10- to 14-year-old children to organize and joyously serve in the Bal Nagari while continuing their education. In Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar, the visiting public is offering homage to the entire Hindu tradition, which is represented through a variety of avatars and spiritual luminaries honoured on this campus. Many festivals have been celebrated on a grand scale, but the centenary celebration of Pramukh Swami Maharaj is historic. The essence of this festival is transforming people’s lives to benefit the world. It is a platform to educate people about the richness of our vibrant culture.”

Raghuvir Chaudhary, Former President of the Gujarat Sahitya Parishad, added, “My favourite exhibition here was Sant Param Hitkari, which showed how Pramukh Swami Maharaj did so much for so many, regardless of caste or creed. When youths are trained, they are blessed with so much strength. This can be seen from how the young swamis are currently engaged in great works for society. I feel BAPS’s greatest service to the world is its work in holistic child development. The enlightened guru has always been present in BAPS and will always remain.”

Padma Shri Kumarpal Desai, Trustee of Gujarat Vishwakosh Trust, said, “This event is neither ancient nor modern, but eternal because it is the celebration of a universal figure like Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Pramukh Swami Maharaj taught us to love unconditionally, to give unstintingly, to care unselfishly. He inspired a revolution, not politically or militarily, but through his pure love. He was the very soul of this world; the light of India’s culture and tradition. The first lesson he imparted was that of spirituality. The second was of service. He taught that the selfless service of others benefits us spiritually.  He inspired not just individuals, but entire families to serve. Pramukh Swami Maharaj and his institution can astound the greatest management experts through their creative capacity. Work that would take 50 years has been done in two years here by BAPS.  I have never seen such a passion for service in any other organization.

“Pramukh Swami Maharaj was not a sadhu of Gujarat, or any single sampraday or religion, but a sadhu of the world. He was not merely the leader of Hinduism, but he was the torchbearer of culture and the architect of global humanity. Pramukh Swami Maharaj provided a mother’s love, a father’s comfort, and a guru’s wisdom. He revolutionized humanity by granting people completeness, enlightening them with spirituality. Pramukh Swami Maharaj helped countless people experience God. He did not just create mandirs, but he transformed everyone’s homes into mandirs. Egoism, domination and expectations are the enemies of love; Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s life was wholly devoid of these elements.

“Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s response to the terrorist attack on Akshardham was the highest ideal of forgiveness that helped the world realize what equanimity and true Indian culture is. Pramukh Swami Maharaj gave us universality. There is not the slightest distinction of caste, creed or background in BAPS. It embodies the highest ideal that the whole world is one family. In short, what did Pramukh Swami Maharaj give to us? For our lips – honesty, for our voice – prayer, for our hands – service, for our heart – spirituality, for our face – laughter and spiritual light.”

Bhagyesh Jha, IAS, Chairperson of Gujarat Sahitya Academy, shared, “Upon seeing Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar, I feel immense happiness. In each particle of the Nagar, I see Pramukh Swami Maharaj. His joyful face is evoked in my mind. This is not only Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s centenary celebration, but it is equally a celebration of the reawakening of the most ancient culture, a celebration of Hinduism, and a celebration of India’s continued progress.  Pramukh Swami Maharaj was an ambassador of God’s affection.”

Ashok Singhal, Union State Minister of Assam, said, “After coming here, I have realized not only the grandeur of this great Nagar, but the faith and love for Pramukh Swami Maharaj that inspired this unimaginable service of 80,000 volunteers. Through them, we still feel Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s divine touch. Pramukh Swami Maharaj created a virtuous society. Thousands serve here day and night without expectation. This impossible feat is possible here only because of devotion and the purity of the guru. The Swaminarayan Sampraday has inspired people to give, not take. Grand mandirs have been built by BAPS and countless children have been taught to be ideal moral citizens. This has been my personal experience.”

Rajendrakumar Arlekar, Governor of Himachal Pradesh, shared, “Pramukh  Swami Maharaj inspired the nation not just through his words, but through his work and work ethic. His life is itself an inspiration to us. The phrase ‘His life is a message’ could not be truer for Pramukh Swami Maharaj.

“As I entered this Nagar, I felt there was a sense of faith and devotion that will inspire all who come here. I myself am inspired. Who would not be inspired by seeing this Nagar?! Students of management should come here and learn about all that is happening under the guidance and blessings of Mahant Swami Maharaj.

“The entire event, on such a large scale, is organized without chaos or mismanagement. It is an example for the whole world. It inspires us to leave with an uplifting message. I have not come here to guide, but to learn from you and this festival.”

In his blessings, His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj said, “Through the speeches of eminent scholars, today we learned a great deal about the spiritual literature written by the swamis of the Swaminarayan Sampraday. Pramukh Swami Maharaj often said, ‘We should develop a habit of reading religious and spiritual literature that will benefit our lives.’ We should not read things that will pollute our minds or discourage us from moral living. The Vachanamrut, Swamini Vato and biographies of our gurus should be read daily as they contain immense spiritual wisdom. Unfortunately, people are less attracted to this spiritual literature, but are enticed by impure content. We should not read impure content, as it will be difficult for us to escape from their impressions. Even if we read only one or two lines, but read something that will benefit your life.

“Our reading should be coupled with prayer, as that will help instil what we read in our lives. One should not just continuously read, but pause, introspect, and contemplate upon what one has read. Such reading will be immensely beneficial.”

Conference on Swaminarayan Literature

26 Dec. 2022, Monday, Ahmedabad, India

An International Conference on Swaminarayan bhakti literature was held on 26 December 2022 at the Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar in Ahmedabad. Scholars, writers, poets, and intellectuals discussed the significance of literature produced by Swaminarayan bhakti poets from the eighteenth century to the present day. The conference was organized by BAPS Swaminarayan Research Institute, New Delhi, in collaboration with Gujarat University, Ahmedabad on the occasion of the centenary celebrations of his Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj.

The Swaminarayan tradition possesses a rich and diverse multilingual repository of prose and poetry. The detailed study and analysis of the contributions of scholars, poets, musicians and litterateurs provide a deep insight into the culture, history, religion, customs and traditions. The conference was organized to discuss the role of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, his disciples, and the legacy of Swaminarayan bhakti poets in enriching the heritage of not only Gujarat but the South Asian literary world at large.

The Inaugural Session

Pujya Viveksagardas Swami inaugurated the International Conference on “Swaminarayaniya Sant Sahitya” by performing the deep pragatya. In his inaugural speech, Prof. Raghuvir Chaudhari, author of more than 80 books and the recipient of Sahitya Akademi Award and Jnanpith Award, emphasized the teachings of Bhagwan Swaminarayan in the promotion of Gujarati literature. He also added that “Pramukh Swami promoted the Gujarati language through his speech at the Millennium World Peace Summit at the United Nations.” Pointing to individual swamis of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, he mentioned their achievements in the field of music, literature, and social service. He further mentioned that “the element of religion and spirituality introduced at the R20 Summit [in Indonesia] now constitutes a historical moment.”

Shri Anil Joshi, a renowned poet and recipient of Sahitya Akademi Award, recounted his memories with Yogiji Maharaj and Pramukh Swami Maharaj. He narrated how their encouragement to study and recite poetry played a significant role at critical junctions in his career.

In his keynote speech, the Chairman of Gujarat Sahitya Akademi, Shri Bhagyesh Jha, elaborated on the literary creations by Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s illustrious disciples and highlighted their practical relevance. He added that the bhakti, spirituality, and metaphysics harmoniously expressed through Swaminarayan literature can be witnessed in the Pramukh Swami Maharaj centenary celebrations. He further elaborated, “We need to travel through the literary universe of these bhakti poets. If we do so, then we will feel connected to the cosmic energy and bliss experienced by them. The poetries of Brahmanand, Muktanand, and Premanand are metaphysical commentaries that enlarge our understanding of life and universe.”

Prof. Balvantrai Jani, Chancellor of Doctor Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya Sagar, emphasized the role of Brahmanand Swami in the devotional literature of Gujarat. He paid tribute to several genres of literature—biographical, theoretical, lyrical, and philosophical—penned by Brahmanand Swami. As a multilingual and multi-dimensional poet, Prof. Jani argued, Brahmanand had the ability to create poetries in an instant. He said, “Pramukh Swami’s centennial celebrations will serve as a perfect prelude to the 250th anniversary of Brahmanand Swami. Inspired by Sahajanand Swami, Brahmanand Swami fostered relationships with people from other religions including the Muslim Nawab of Junagadh.”

The inaugural session concluded with Yogi Trivedi, a former journalist at CNN and CBS and Adjunct Professor of Journalism at Columbia University. He narrated incidences where Pramukh Swami Maharaj inspired him “to study literature without ego and to make scholarship accessible to the outside world.” He recalled how Pramukh Swami Maharaj had advised him, “Do something for your community. Educate your mind, and then educate others.” At the end of the session, Yogi Trivedi’s newly published book, In Love, At Ease: Everyday Spirituality with Pramukh Swami, was felicitated and distributed to the stage guests.

The Plenary and Presentation Sessions

The plenary session started with Shri Kumarpal Desai. In his address, he emphasized “the need to evaluate literary works of the Swaminarayan tradition from our own perspective.” He further stated, “The work of these bhakti poets is as meaningful as those of Narsinh, Mira, and Surdas.” He further mentioned that the literature of Swaminarayan bhakti poets was a reflection of their inner self where the message of detachment and asceticism is woven with the message of loving devotion.

Thereafter, Prof. Madhav Ramanuj, editor of Akhand Anand and the former President of Gandharv Sangeet Vidyalaya Trust, Ahmedabad and Gujarati Sahitya Parishad, recounted his experience of the conference on “Sahajanand Swami and the Swaminarayan Sampradaya,” held in New Delhi in 2013. He shared his fond memories with Pramukh Swami Maharaj and how Swami often invited him to participate in various conferences and events.

Shri Vasant Gadhvi, the former State Chief Information Commissioner of Gujarat, highlighted Gandhi’s role in promoting the bhakti literature of Mira and Narsinha Mehta. Equating Swaminarayan bhakti literature with “the sacred flow of Ganga,” he brought to attention the role of Dalpatram Travadi, a renowned 19th-century poet, in furthering Gujarati literature. He noted that Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s unique contribution lay in not only identifying societal concerns but also helping resolve them. He concluded by stating, “The Swaminarayan intellectual and bhakti traditions will herald a new era in literature and inspire all of humanity.”

In his concluding remarks for the session, Mahamahopadhyay Bhadreshdas Swami emphasized the simplicity and accessibility of the bhakti literature of the Swaminarayan poets. He said, “Poets thrive through imaginative freedom, and cannot be bound by formal rules of language and grammar. Words in literature are the embodiment of experienced emotions. A poet is not born through mere training but inherently through one’s own trials and tribulations.” He further stressed that traditional music associated with historical works of poetry must be preserved.

The Paper Presentation Sessions

The session was moderated by Pratapsingh Dabhi, a popular Gujarati poet. In this session, Dr. Pratibha Dave highlighted how spiritual wealth rather than material wealth is primary in the poems of Nishkulanand Swami. Dr. Ashwin Andani, the Head of the Department of Gujarati at D.C.M. College, Viramgam, remarked on the element of humor in Swaminarayan literature. Prof. Sanjay Chaudhari, the Dean at Ahmedabad University, Ahmedabad, traced the complementary role of vicharan and literature from the time of Bhagwan Swaminarayan till Pramukh Swami Maharaj in extending moral values to society at large. Dr. Nisarg Ahir, an Associate Professor in the Department of Gujarati at Gujarat Arts and Science College, Ahmedabad, highlighted that the uniqueness of Swaminarayaniya Sant literature lay in the fact that the subject of their devotion was alive and present with them. Dr. Darshana Oza, the Head of the Department of Gujarati at S.N.D.T University, highlighted the parallels in the bhakti poems of Mirabai and ‘Premsakhi’ Premanand. Dr. Purvi Oza, an Associate Professor in the Department of Gujarati at Sarkari Vinayan College, Gandhinagar, emphasized the role of Muktanand Swami and Brahmanand Swami in rethinking women’s dharma in the early-19th century—at a time when their socio-spiritual worlds were largely ignored. Dr. Iva Patel, an Assistant Professor at Augsburg University, focused on the Dhiraj Akhyan of Nishkulanand Swami which, she argued, is a text celebrating devotion along with ascetic ideals. She then elaborated on how the text exhibits one’s trust in God, emphasizes belief in God as the all-doer, and expresses the desire to experience the joys of devotion. Shri Jayesh Acharya, a postgraduate student at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Vadodara, then presented on the Vachanamrut, the recorded teachings of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. He showed the openness of debate and accessibility of spiritual discussions in the text. Finally, Shri Kirtan Patel, a graduate student at the University of Texas, focused on the literary works of the sadhus and disciples of Shastriji Maharaj. These poets used bhakti poems as a medium to memorialize events, record history, and celebrate key events

The Concluding Session

In the concluding session, Dr. Shrutiprakashdas Swami, elaborated the importance of the recently published Sanskrit text, Akshar-Purushottam Mahatmya, which aims to historically record the authenticity of the theology of Akshar and Purushottam. Swami then highlighted the rigorous cross-checking of references required to compile the text. He also mentioned the keen involvement of Pramukh Swami Maharaj during the writing process. Thereafter, Shri Vasant Gadhvi emphasized the lyrical quality of Brahmanand Swami’s poetic works. “These works were accepted by musicians and audiences on the merit of its quality,” he said. He also noted how the present conference played a significant role in evaluating the underappreciated role of Swaminarayan literature in enhancing the beauty and richness of Gujarati literature. He finally concluded by stating that the Swaminarayan literature has performed the task of bringing together diverse individuals, communities, cultures, and religions. In his concluding speech, Dr. Balvantrai Jani mentioned how the Gujarati language was preserved through the creation of the Vachanamrut. He said, “The works of Swaminarayan bhakti poets like Brahmanand Swami, Premanand Swami, and others are unparalleled and timeless. The true importance of this literature lies in its ability to sanctify the hearts and minds of devotees.” At last, Dr. Jyotindra Dave expressed his gratitude to Aksharvatsaldas Swami, Shrutiprakashdas Swami, Bhadreshdas Swami and other swamis for organizing this conference, as well as eminent dignitaries and over 150 delegates for ensuring the conference was a success.

National Sant Sammelan: Evening Assembly

25 Dec. 2022, Sunday, Ahmedabad, India

In the evening assembly of tens of thousands, Mahamandaleshwar Yatindranand Giriji of the Juna Akhada said, “I bow millions of times at the feet of the head of all swamis and Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar is a phenomenal creation that reminds me of the creation of a new universe as described in the Puranas, and I commend the 80,000 volunteers who served selflessly in its creation. In the Ramacharitmanas, Rama Bhagwan taught us that one will find devotion to God only in the life of the true sant. Such a true sant was Pramukh Swami Maharaj. At his feet, all the problems of one’s life are resolved. Contact with Pramukh Swami Maharaj liberated millions from slavery to addictions and connected them with God. We are fortunate to have been inspired by the immortalizing nectar of his divine words that taught us to be better humans and do good for others.”

Dattatreya Hosabale, General Secretary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, said, “The activities of BAPS and Pramukh Swami Maharaj have never been for their own benefit, but for the benefit of society, the nation and the world. The extraordinary programmes organized at Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar are enkindling the sentiments of spirituality in the hearts of millions. There can be no greater service to humanity than creating a sense of spiritual contentment and joy in the hearts of people. Spiritually enlightened souls like Pramukh Swami Maharaj enkindle the dormant spirituality in people’s hearts and grant them the experience of spiritual bliss and contentment.

“Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s life was an embodiment of the four virtues of dharma – truth, purity, compassion and austerities. Pramukh Swami Maharaj inspired people not only through his words, but through his life. He lived his motto “In the joy of others lies our own,” and served others every second of his life. The true celebration of his centenary is not for just one month or one year, but it is to live the values he taught throughout one’s life.

“It is our good fortune that we have been born in India in this era. We have the confidence that India will show the world a path forward through the darkness due to the inspiration of great souls like Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Everyone can pay homage to Pramukh Swami Maharaj by improving their own life. We may not be able to give light to the whole world like the sun that was Pramukh Swami Maharaj, but taking inspiration from him, we can be a lamp that eradicates the darkness in our vicinity by following in his footsteps with all the strength we have.”

Chidanand Saraswatiji, Head of Paramarth Niketan Ashram, was also present in the assembly. He shared, “I have been deeply touched by Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s simplicity and humility, gently guiding society by seeing God within everyone. He may have been anywhere in the world, yet regularly took out time to read and respond to letters even from villagers in India. Thus, I had declared many years ago that Pramukh Swami Maharaj is the ‘Saint of the Century’.

“An event like this would typically not even attract 80,000 people, but here the volunteer count itself is 80,000 people! I witnessed how everyone has a smile on their faces. It convinces me that Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s spirit is very much alive here. Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar is an extraordinary place infused with the divine messages Pramukh Swami Maharaj conveyed through his life. Unlike entertainment parks, it gives the world his message of peace which needs to be infused in every village and city across India. By remaining true to our values, ideals and spiritual roots, peace and harmony will be strengthened in our families and across the world.

“This festival is teaching the millions who attend that our global challenges such as conflicts, climate change and environmental degradation can only be addressed by implementing spiritual ideals in individuals, in families and in neighbourhoods, as that will ultimately transform the country and the world.”

Singh Sahib Giani Ranjit Singhji, the Head Granthi of Gurudwara Bangla Sahib in New Delhi, added, “Pramukh Swami Maharaj embodied the virtues of spirituality, humility and renunciation, which are the virtues of a true sant. Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s life was for others. From schools, hospitals and de-addiction campaigns to water pumps and many such humanitarian activities, for many years, Pramukh Swami Maharaj worked to reduce others’ pain and benefit their lives. Thus we must pledge to follow his example by respecting  all and loving and serving one another.”

In conclusion, Mahamandaleshwar Dr. Swami Rameshwardasji Maharaj of Manokamna Siddh Shri Hanuman Mandir, said, “88,000 rishis performed austerities at one time in Naimisharanya Kshetra, one of the most sacred of sites in India. The 80,000 volunteers serving here are a representation of those rishis. Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s spiritual and social outlook and vision were broad and for the good of all. He revolutionized the Swaminarayan Sampradaya, creating mandirs and transforming society. The world follows the path set by sadhus. The efforts and austerities of Pramukh Swami Maharaj are the reason why the world considers him the spiritual leader of all.”

National Sant Sammelan: Celebrating Saintliness

25 Dec. 2022, Sunday, Ahmedabad, India

‘National Sant Sammelan’ of Over 250 Mahants and Acharyas
at Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar in Ahmedabad

A special convention held in the presence of
over 250 esteemed sadhus, mahants and acharyas from all over India

21 such conventions held across India earlier this year
in honour of Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s centenary celebrations

Bhagwan Swaminarayan rejuvenated the monastic heritage during his presence on earth over 240 years ago. He brought about a peaceful transformation in society by inspiring thousands of people to live a spiritually moral life through the more than 3,000 sadhus (Hindu monks) that he had ordained. Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s fifth spiritual successor, His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj, brought further glory to this sacred sadhu heritage throughout the world.

To pay tribute to Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s broad vision, saintliness and genuine respect for sadhus of all sampradayas, a National Sant Convention was held on 25 December as part of the centennial celebrations of Pramukh Swami Maharaj in which more than 250 leading swamis, mahants and acharyas from all over India gathered.

The esteemed delegates arrived at Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar in the morning, where they were ceremoniously welcomed at the main ‘Sant Dwar’ entrance gate by hundreds of BAPS swamis before being led on a colourful procession through the Nagar.

The convention then commenced in the conference hall amid the chanting of Vedic verses.

Excerpts of Speeches from the National Sant Convention

Viveksagardas Swami, Senior Swami of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha: “I bow down to everyone present in the National Sant Convention on the occasion of the centenary celebrations of Pramukh Swami Maharaj. This spiritual confluence of so many revered sadhus from different sampradayas feels like the Kumbh Mela. We may be sadhus of different sampradays, but our root is one. For decades, Pramukh Swami Maharaj has always held sadhus from any sampradaya in the highest esteem. In 1981, during the bicentennial anniversary celebrations of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, he convened around 3,000 sadhus from all over India to offer his respects. Everyone has also had great respect for Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s saintly life and work for Sanatan Hindu Dharma. Just as Swami Vivekanand introduced Hinduism to the West at the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago, Pramukh Swami Maharaj spread Hindu culture across the world by building more than 1,200 mandirs.”

Pujyapad Parmatmanand Ji Maharaj, President of Bharatiya Acharya Sabha: “I firstly bow to the globally revered Pramukh Swami Maharaj. The land of Gujarat is incredibly sanctified as many sadhus have blessed it with their holy feet. The very breath of any religious organisation is its sadhus and the saintliness they uphold. Pramukh Swami Maharaj nurtured an order of sadhus who uphold the utmost saintliness. In spite of years of challenges, Hindu culture has been preserved because it is being protected by God himself as well as the sadhus who have gathered here today.”

Ravindra Puri Maharaj, President of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad: “I bow to Pramukh Swami Maharaj, who was a divine person. Throughout his life, Pramukh Swami Maharaj propagated Hindu culture to every corner of the world. Everybody now bows on seeing sadhus in saffron robes. Thus we are all indebted to Pramukh Swami Maharaj for increasing the pride of sadhus in our community.”

Krushnamuni Maharaj: “Many sadhus have contributed in making the Indian culture universal. It is the duty of the sadhus to continue building society through our way of life and our work just as Pramukh Swami Maharaj inspired countless with his saintliness.

Gnandevsinhji Maharaj, Chairman of Nirmal Akhada: “I bow to all the sadhus of all sampradays in India, as well as to Pramukh Swami Maharaj and all the swamis of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha. It is only due to the grace of Pramukh Swami Maharaj that we are able to be in the presence of all these sadhus of India at Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar. Pramukh Swami Maharaj made all in his company spiritually immortal. He embodied a sadhu with the highest form of compassion and lived as a true servant of humanity.”

Acharya Shri Avichal Das Ji Maharajshri: “Anyone who wants to understand the role of a sadhu should look towards Pramukh Swami Maharaj. He was the best example. The Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar we see today is a result of the tireless work and meticulous planning of the sadhus. There are many religious sampradayas in India, and each needs a legacy to continue. True to this, Pramukh Swami Maharaj has nurtured an order of more than 1,000 sadhus. It is easy to preach on religious teachings, but only the sadhu who has renounced his home and family in the true sense can uplift society. This spirit of service and dedication is particularly apparent at this Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar.”

Atal Peethadheeshwar Swami Vishwatmanand Saraswati: “It is a matter of pride that we are all present at Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s centenary celebrations. India is a land of saints, ascetics and sages, and it is a matter of great fortune for us all that a great personality like Pramukh Swami Maharaj manifested here. Anyone who comes to Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar will become more familiar with Hindu culture.”

Shri Shri Acharya Balkanand Ji Maharaj: “All sadhus and volunteers have immersed themselves in Pramukh Swami Maharaj as they serve at this Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar. Those who seek refuge of Pramukh Swami Maharaj will experience that all their sorrows and pains disappear. Even though Pramukh Swami Maharaj is not physically here today, his presence will remain alive for eternity.”

Jagadguru Shri Dharacharya Ji Maharaj: “Today one can see the forms of dharma (righteousness), gnan (knowledge), vairagya (worldly detachment) and bhakti (devotion) at this most sacred Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar. Pramukh Swami Maharaj would have been overjoyed to see all the sadhus here today. Bhagwan Swaminarayan infused divinity into the blessed land of Gujarat and liberated those in his association. Pramukh Swami Maharaj upheld the principal duty of a true sadhu to connect all swamis and devotees to God. Hindu culture and heritage will remain alive through sadhus like Pramukh Swami Maharaj.”

Ramanandacharya Ji Maharaj: “Today, in BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, one can witness the devotion and dedication of young sadhus. Only here can they channelise such dedication among youths and spread the message of Sanatan Dharma in different countries.”

Mahamandaleshwar Yatindranand Giri Ji Maharaj: “Pramukh Swami Maharaj was born to spread Sanatan Hindu Dharma across the globe.”

Mahant Shri Devi Prasad Ji Maharaj: “Today I understand how legendary Pramukh Swami Maharaj is when I see so many virtuous sadhus present here to give him a tribute.”

Mahamandaleshwar Bhagwat Swarupdas Ji Maharaj: “It was our great fortune that Pramukh Swami Maharaj had visited our ashram in Haridwar with 250 of his sadhus. Even though we all belong to different sampradayas, our religion and ultimate goal is the same. If we all attach our mind to a sadhu like Pramukh Swami Maharaj, we will undoubtedly attain ultimate liberation.”

Swami Brahmeshanandji Acharya Maharaj (Goa): “Today, the entire world’s expectations are on Hindu values and culture to inspire an ethical lifestyle. The Swaminarayan Sampradaya is spreading the message of eternal Vedic Hindu principles across the world. The Sant Convention that has taken place today at Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar will spread the message of Hindu unity to the entire world.”

Jitendranathji Maharaj, Head of Devnath Peeth: “Devotion to God has spread worldwide from Gujarat, and praises of Akshar Purushottam are reverberating in all directions. The swamis of the Swaminarayan Sampradaya are at the forefront of relaying the message of Hindu culture to all corners of the world. I firmly believe that if God wanted to descend on this earth in the form of the Guru, then that would be through Pramukh Swami Maharaj. In my opinion, the Swaminarayan Sampradaya will play a prominent role in making India an exemplar for the countries of the world.”

Maha Mandaleshwar Dilipdasji Maharaj, Mahant of Jagannath Mandir, Ahmedabad: “Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s works for religion and society were so phenomenal that today, on the occasion of his centennial celebrations, Hindu religious leaders from all over India have gathered here.”

Pujyapad Acharya Jeeyar Swami Laxmiprapannaji: “A true swami inspires life-transformation not by impressing people, but by the purity of their life. Pramukh Swami Maharaj was such a swami. I pray that swamis like Pramukh Swami Maharaj are born on this earth again and again.”

Mahant Fuldolviharidasji: “Swamis protect society and the nation, and God is ever-present in a swami like Pramukh Swami Maharaj.”

Maha Mandaleshwar Atmanand Saraswatiji Maharaj: “Through the association of a true guru, one becomes pure. Pramukh Swami Maharaj has created such a society where people live a pure life.”

Pujyapad Chaitanya Shambhu Maharaj: “In my view, Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s Centennial Celebration is the largest celebration of the century. If we imbibe the principles of Pramukh Swami Maharaj in our life, we will certainly become virtuous. Mandirs ignite spirituality, and by building over 1,200 mandirs, Pramukh Swami Maharaj has immensely served society. Pramukh Swami Maharaj has fostered family values by inspiring family home assemblies, and he has guided educated youths to tread on the path of God. The colour saffron is not just a symbolic colour for the swami’s robes, but it enkindles Hindu values. Pramukh Swami Maharaj was a confluence of speech, action and spiritual discernment. If we wish to celebrate Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s centenary in its truest sense, we will have to walk on the path shown by him and imbibe his teachings in our life.”

His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj’s Blessings: “I feel really blessed to have the darshan of swamis and mahants from across India all at once. I offer my prostrations to you all, because all of you are greatly serving society.

“I am indebted to you that you have taken out time from your busy schedules to visit the Pramukh Swami Maharaj centenary celebrations. Pramukh Swami Maharaj often said, ‘True religion is that which fosters mutual love.’ Today, as swamis and mahants from so many different sampradayas have gathered together, we see his words becoming a reality. I pray that we are all able to work together to serve society, and that I may forever be the beneficiary of all of your blessings.”

Jagadguru Shankracharya Shri Sadanand Saraswati Maharaj: “I am delighted to be here at Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar, and I would like to thank Mahant Swami Maharaj for organising these centenary celebrations. If all of us sadhus and mahants are unified, then we will be able to serve society in the best possible manner.”

De-addiction Day: Celebrating Transformation

24 Dec. 2022, Saturday, Ahmedabad, India

During his lifetime, Pramukh Swami Maharaj inspired over 4 million people worldwide to give up addictions. These included entrepreneurs, world leaders, research scientists, farmers, and tribal communities. On ‘De-addiction Day: Celebrating Transformation’, dignitaries paid homage to Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s tireless efforts in this area.

In 2007, 28,000 children and youths followed the footsteps of Pramukh Swami Maharaj by personally contacting over 2.1 million people. Of these, 633,000 people pledged to give up addictions, saving 344 crore rupees. Impressed by such a massive de-addiction campaign conducted by BAPS children, President Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam invited the youngsters to Rashtrapati Bhavan on 5 July 2007 to congratulate them.

In May 2022, to commemorate Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s Centennial Celebrations and India’s Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav (75 years of India’s Independence Day), BAPS children once again conducted a large-scale de-addiction campaign. 16,000 BAPS children enthusiastically reached out to and personally met over 1.4 million people. Of these, over 400,000 people pledged to give up their addictions.

At Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar, the exhibition Tod do ye bandhan” (Break free of these bonds) inspires 50,000 people a day to free themselves from the shackles of addictions.

On the occasion of ‘De-addiction Day: Celebrating Transformation’ at Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar, dignitaries joined His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj to pay tribute to Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s tireless efforts in convincing people to renounce addictions as well as inspiring large-scale de-addiction campaigns that transformed the lives of millions around the world.

Adarshjivandas Swami, the biographer of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, narrated episodes from the life of Pramukh Swami that illustrated his faith in the power of prayer and worship in inspiring people to live an addiction-free life.

BAPS youths then sang the kirtan ‘Kyu Rizega Rama’ accompanied by traditional Indian instruments.

BAPS scholar Anirdeshdas Swami spoke on the exemplary service of Pramukh Swami Maharaj in this sector and hailed him as the ‘De-Addiction Ambassador for the World’. Anirdeshdas Swami said, “Addictions cause immeasurable destruction to one’s body, mind, family and society. Two centuries ago, Bhagwan Swaminarayan began de-addiction campaigns, which Pramukh Swami Maharaj revived on a mass scale. Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s noble purpose, selfless personality, tireless efforts and honest means produced extraordinary results. The de-addiction work that hundreds of thousands of people could not do, Pramukh Swami Maharaj inspired with his selfless love for humanity.”

An engaging video presentation showed how Pramukh Swami Maharaj transformed countless lives to live a pure and healthy life by giving up addictions.

Padma Shri Dr. Pankaj Shah, Director of the Gujarat Cancer Research Institute, said, “For the last 50 years, my life’s mission has been to stop the spread of cancer. Stopping tobacco usage would reduce cancer incidence by 40%. These addictions not only destroy the consumer but also the whole family – physically and financially.

“I have witnessed Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s initiatives to stop addictions. During summer vacations, BAPS children travelling through society to convince people to renounce addictions have been the most effective I have seen in my entire life. The power of an innocent child to convince adults to throw away their addictions is truly divine. These de-addiction programmes by Pramukh Swami Maharaj are being carried forward by Mahant Swami Maharaj and will have far-reaching effects towards creating a better addiction-free and cancer-free society.”

Dr. Satish Poonia, President of BJP Rajasthan, also shared his views. “The unforgettable lessons I learned through the musicals and exhibitions here are too immense to articulate in words. Pramukh Swami Maharaj has transformed lives and cultivated love for our culture, traditions and values among children and youth. In the age of technology, people have become distanced from nature and spirituality. ‘Swaminarayan’ is the name which brings people back to nature and spirituality. My experience here will inspire me for the rest of my life.”

Other dignitaries present at the event included Mahesh Desai, Managing Director of Meera & Ceiko Pumps, Ashish Dhakan, Managing Director & CEO of Prama HikVision India, and Mehul Patel, Managing Partner & CEO of NewCrest Image.

The evening programme concluded with His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj’s blessings. “We heard about the transformations of the millions through de-addiction programmes by Pramukh Swami Maharaj. He was so pure that he purified all who came into contact with him. Whoever connected with him transformed into a person who started living a clean and pure life. Pramukh Swami Maharaj taught us to live a beautiful life. A short but beautiful life has a strong positive impact on family and society. Identifying your own faults and working towards self-improvement is vital. Do not sully the purity of your soul in your race to acquire money and power. Being poor and pure is an infinitely better way of living. Only see good, do good, and wish good for all.”

De-Addiction Services of BAPS
Inspired by Pramukh Swami Maharaj and Mahant Swami Maharaj

During his lifetime, Bhagwan Swaminarayan inspired 3,000 monks to travel through villages where they counselled people to give up addictions. Pramukh Swami Maharaj continued this movement, ensuring that people led an addiction-free life in India and worldwide. Today, Mahant Swami Maharaj inspires countless to shun the shackles of additions.

On the occasion of Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s Centennial Celebrations, BAPS children aged 12 to 14 conducted a large-scale de-addiction campaign between 8 and 22 May 2022. 16,000 children personally reached out to over 1.4 million people at their homes, shops, factories, bus stands and many public places during the 15-day campaign. Of these, over 400,000 people pledged to shun their addictions and that they, too, would convince others to give up their addictions.

Over 50,000 BAPS children participated in the de-addiction rallies organized at 100 BAPS centres across India on World No-Tobacco Day on 31 May 2022. During these rallies, the children appealed to all to support social uplift through de-addiction and a healthy lifestyle.

In a public assembly in 1985, Joseph Maturia, Kenyan Minister at the time, had pledged to give up alcohol in the presence of Pramukh Swami Maharaj. When he met Pramukh Swami Maharaj again on 12 May 2007 at the BAPS mandir in Nairobi, he said, “Pramukh Swami Maharaj had inspired me to give up alcohol 22 years ago. Since then, I have never had a craving to drink alcohol. He has truly transformed my life for the better.”

We should imbibe ethics and discipline in our life and set an example for others. Lost money can be recovered, but not lost reputation. Our wrongdoings have a boomerang effect as they cannot be hid in a round world that is without any corners.”
